Helmsley Brewery - Yorkshire Legend 3.8%

Quite mild but really nice flavour and ruby in colour too.

Great Heck Brewery (Doncaster)
Amish Mash 4.7%

'Fusion of European and American beer styles, a German style cloudy wheat beer brewed with wheat malt and German Weizen yeast, hopped with loads of American IPA hops late in the boil'

Obviously its unfined so contains some sediment and its amazing

Great Heck Brewery
Citra 4.5%

'Citra is a golden ale made with only one hop variety. Premium American Citra hope are added in heaping quantities late in the boil and during fermentation.

Another fantastic beer.

Kelham Island (Sheffield)
Pale Rider 5.2%

'Perfumy floral hops tangy citrus fruit and biscuity malt, hop resins puny notes tart fruit and sappy malt fill the mouth'

Enough of the bollocks from the bottle, this is a good beer.

Thatchers Cheddar Valley - 6%

Cider. Despite the fact it looked radioactive, it was bright orange and smelt a bit funny, it was surprisingly nice.

Batemans Black Pepper Ale - 5.1%

Comes with a sachet of pepper, first taste was almost caramel then had a slight hint of pepper as an after taste, massive gimmick sticking more in and made the last few mouthfuls vile.

Longhorn IPA. - 5%

Not bad but was on tap and I wouldn't want to drink it all night.

Mate went on holiday to Devon and brought me back 3 bottles from New Lion Brewery.

Totnes Stout - pretty nice considering I haven't tried many. Probably my preferred one.

Mane Event - very hoppy, acquired taste.

Pandit IPA - again a very acquired taste.

Yes, Ringwood brewery is decent, Boondoggle and Old Thumper are two good ales by them!

Turns out we won a gold award too!

Beers I'm drinking/drunk Allendale APA (Allendale pale ale) 5.5%

Nice and hoppy just how I like them, quite fizzy too so this would taste a lot better from cask and not bottle how I'm having it now.

V.I.P Brewery (Alnwick, used to be based in Longframlington) Village Copper, Ginger flavoured bitter 4.2%

Subtle gingerness obviously, but a good balance of ginger and bitterness.

Didn't keep a list this year. Had 5 pints in total and remember having -

Farmhouse cider - 6% quite sweet.

I tried a just add water & yeast beer kit from Victors Drinks.

Did it taste sweet? Stalling is when not all the sugar is converted into alcohol or C02, if it tasted disgusting then its probably a bacterial infection from some equipment not being sterilised properly.

The only other thing I can think of is if it got cold it may have stalled, the temperature of the mash tun at work is around 70 degrees celsius and the hot liquor tank or kettle as its known is around 100 degrees celsius, the fermenting vessels are around the 20 degree mark.

Also if it got too hot, it could produce off flavours.

My guess would be bacteria infection. See if you can get some peracitic acid https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sterilization_%28microbiology%29#Peracetic_acid we use it after the casks have been washed (with caustic 90 and rinsed with clean water) to sterilise the casks and poly pins its also non tainting so doesn't matter if you put a hydrometer or thermometer into the beer after cleaning them (ours are stored in it)

Also I've never worn gloves when cleaning with peracitic acid but it may sting if it gets into a cut, caustic 90 on the other hand will burn the fuck out of you!

Sounds like you know what you're talking about!

It was kept inside the house which did get cold so I guess it could have been that.

Also, the jug come straight out of the dishwasher but wasn't sterilised. In my haste and half way through I realised the error of my ways, as when we did it with a "proper" kit it was absolutely lovely and worked a treat!

Try keeping it somewhere warmer in future, not silly warm somewhere constantly between 20-30 degrees but after reading that I'd definitely say the bad flavour was non sterile equipment. As said, stalled beer tastes sweet and sharp but as the sugar isn't fermented out it means the ABV wont be as expected, say it was meant to be 4% if it stalled it may only be 3.5% for example.

This tasted odd and the fizz tasted a bit fake, a bit like fizzy cola bottles fizz.

Have you any experience of them kits? Are the usually fool proof?
