Went to start the car tonight (2001 mk2 clio 1.5 dci), wouldnt start. Glow plug isnt coming on, immobiliser light staying on (Usually goes off after a couple of seconds).

Seems if you turn the key straight round to start it then it will turn over then stop, if its left for all the dash warning lights to go out then it will not turn over.

Tried the basics like jump starting etc, didnt work.

Urgent as I need the car at 5am tomorrow morning for work!

check the relays under the bonnet, they can go a bit green and cause immobiliser faults, other than that its iether a key or ring decoder fault

Checked the relays, they all seem fine. Not looking forward to how much this is going to sting me, plus the nearest renault garage is 70 miles away

i work at an arnold clark renault in st helens.. yeah renault will sting you. with the imobiliser light, if it flashes on and off rapidly, its a key fault. if it stays on its either a relay, ring decoder or computer fault.. just hope its not too serious

Found something online that a faulty crank sensor can cause these symptoms, any ideas?

faulty crank sensor would cause it not to fire, but with your imobiliser light bieng on solid, its likely its not that.

check the wiring coming from the relay under the bonnet, common problem of the wire rotting, look for a slight bulge in the wire

Mothers did the same chris
Try a new key battery, iv needed to renew it twice
Failing that, the earths for these is in the rear lights. Take the bulb holder out and check the connections and clean and grease if necessary

On a clio 2 phase 2 its an RF transponder key. The battery in the key only operates the central locking.
There's a braded earth cable that runs from the top of the gearbox to the chassis. That can go green and fall apart

Wierd, replacing the battery has sorted my problem twice. Was enough power to open the car but then wouldnt de-activate the immobiliser

Is yours not an old type infrared key? The imobilser will stay on if it does get an ir signal from the key.

Iv missed out a type.
Theres the old shape, then newer shape ones around 1997 and then there was the ones around 01, same shape as the 182's then they changed them slightly and the ones with the number plate in the rear bumper then the latest ones, 197
Not too sure if the changes were a chanke in mk or a phase

Yeah there was the square shaped clio mk1 (such as the williams), then the mk2 phase 1 with lense headlamps and then mk2 phase 2 which has a crease running down the center of the bonnet. Earlier phase 1 models use an ir key. You have to plip the key to deactivate the immobiliser and as you correctly say, won't work if the key battery is dead. I thought it was an early phase 2 with you saying 2001. My bad

Tried a jump lead as an earth, made no difference

Im having pretty much the exact same problem as this guy:

http://www.renaultforums.co.uk/showthread.php?t=35036

Found 1 broken wire underneath all the wires, fixed that but made no difference.

Have you tried replacing the key battery or using a spare key? Like I say its happened to me twice. Sometimes it wouldnt turn over at all and other times it would turn a few times then cut out.
