Mk3 golf TDi is also a decent shout if on a budget.. i give mine absolute death to work and back, not once broken on me in 10k / 8 months and returns for me 500 miles to £50-55 i have had 550 from a tank - I imagine someone driving sensibly would get a good 600 miles from a tank..

PS now you have me looking at C2's to replace my golf with!

306Dturbo aswell.

Had mine running 1.2bar of boost and it went like fuk and still managed to run good mpg.
