Ok time has come to fit the new timing belt kit to the XE my mate who is doing the conversion is coming to do it for me tomorrow and he has done them before but the only thing is that we didn't mark the cam pullys but can remember where the notch's on the pulls were when removed which they both were at 6 oclock.Do they just get put back on in the same position at 6 oclock?

They line up with notches in the rocker cover

So when refitting them line the notches up at 12 oclock with the cam cover notches and not at 6 oclock where they were when removed?

Line bottom pulley up and cam pulleys up with their respective timing marks on the engine yeah.

Yes but make sure bottom pulley isnt out and crank over with hand before firing it up

Bottom pully notch was bang on the spikey marker thing before removal so just line that back up and the cam pully notchs with the rocker cover notchs and jobs a good un?

Line the bottom crank pulley up not the aux belt pulley tbh

Not the 1 in your hand, the one that's behind that on the engine. Should be top dead centre when that's lined up. Drop a long screwdriver down into piston 1 to make sure if you want then just line the cam pulleys up with the rocker.

Your mate should know how to do it if he's done them before.

That's not my hand Jamie i don't wear silly gloves when working on the car just a google image from mig web.

Yeah that cog that the pully that's in his hand bolts up to should be inline with the notch below it on the bottom of the engine.

Yeah my mate has done a few but im trying to learn things along the way because iv never done anything like this before and with me not marking it before removal i thought id mucked it up big time il get a picture of mine in the morning.

If its not lined what then?

then valves will introduce themselves to pistons and say hello.

as long as you havent tried to start it yes, turn it over by hand a few times and check it. must be lined up on the marks. if it isnt, its not correct.

No hasn't been started as its still on the engine stand.

Should be still lined up then as its just the pully that bolts to it was removed,crank cog itself hasn't been touched.

Il get a pic in the morning to check because iv never really took any notice.

When I turn the cams round to try line the pulleys up with the rocker they don't? :/ the notches aren't vertical? :/ but there's that little hole in the pulley that goes into the cam, do its not like I can move the position of the pulleys? Confused! And also don't know how to work the tensioner lol

And where the cams are.



And when the pulley is placed on you can see the notch almost at 6 oclock but looks like it can only go on one way with the pulley siit on the cam pin.

Take your rocker off, at the end where the pulley is there a bit you can put a spanner or shifter onto and turn each cam to suit. But I do that and thy still don't line up! :/

Turn the crank say 45 degrees, then turn the cams with the pullies on till the notches point up, you'll need to do that with the cam cover off, turn the crank back to the postion it's in the picture, then aline the cam pullies with the notches on the cam cover.

When I turn my cams they like juilt if you get me, as in like I turn it a little bit but it moves itself into a position? :/

The cams are turning spring load valves. Which is why the flip round.

Had a bit of a game on trying to get this best we could fist attempt ended up like this.




Belt tension seemed fine here.


But up top here was too slack for our likeing.


tried to get this right a few times but managed to get the pulley notchs a bit better and the belt tension is much better.






Does this look ok now? Seems to be the best we could get it.

The left pully points a fraction over to the right of the rocker cover marking is that ok? the right pully looks spot on but my mate says almost impossible to get both perfectly lined up.
