For the technology as a whole, it can only be good that apple are bringing out a tablet, if it's a success, (which it will be with it being apple) other manufacturers will have to advance their technology to compete.

I can see in a few years you'll have a tablet of some sorts sitting in the living room, it'll control TV, DVD, etc, Lighting, Cooker, Heating, etc... might be a bit far fetched for now, but I don't see why it won't become common technology in the near future.

Can you get wifi plug sockets yet? I know there's wireless switches that you can use to turn on lights...

Not really far fetched at all, as IIRC people have released apps for the iPhone that do all the above already, so they will be able to work on this instantly - and Im fairly sure someone is already working on a iPad specific app for such things that will add extra features the iPhone one doesnt have due to screen size limitations.

If I got one Id certainly want something like a media centre app to control all that, along with streaming to the iPad so can use that if needed. And the security features sounds good to me too, as a lot of our shop's CCTV are all online so can use that to view them if the alarms go off - or if I want to perv on brides.

All this stuff has been available since before Jesus.

There have been apps for surveilance systems for winmo and symbian for years.

Apple seriously never do anything new, they just market it like they have.

Another one I've just thought of, Archos do a tablet that runs on android, it's just about exactly the same thing.

I know theres been apps out for years, but with the great advance in megapixel cameras other phones just are shit, the iPhone has alot of power behind it, thats why its moved it along in the surveillance industry.

I know that, and tbh Ive wanted a tablet for years to do all of the above.

Its never really the hardware thats been a problem (although tablets have never really been that advanced or decent looking), its the fact they have a huge number of ready made apps with a load more that will be due out when it launches that will make it popular.

The iPad should have been more like the Lenovo IdeaPad U1 - http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/05/lenovo-ideapad-u1-hybrid-hands-on-and-impressions

Seems a bit laggy but that's probably due to W7, get linux on that thing with BumpTop gesture desktop and it'd look sleek as hell

That write up bashes the screen saying the viewing angles of it were shocking, so not that great a comparison tbh.

True, it's a bit harsh of me comparing the glorified e-reader with a product like the Lenovo, it's like comparing a wheel-bound disabled kid to an 'able-bodied'

I more meant comparing something with a screen you can view at more than a 45 degree angle to one you cant, but ah well

HP Slate is another alternative with regards to similar specs and looks, but obviously has a load more features with it running a propper OS - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=apwIiqIKf84

Yeah was looking at that earlier today, that certainly seems more of an alternative.

Can't find anything on when it's released though But it looks a lot more promising, although not sure if it has a built in camera/gps/3G though.

I tried an HP laptop-come-tablet recently and it was shocking. Was one of these with the foldover screen.

It was slow to respond and the screen wobbled all over the place.

I still think the apps could win it for apple.

I was banging on about it needing OSX before it was released, but now Ive seen them run iWorks on it (so no doubt you'll see a Microsoft Office app type thing), it appears it wont matter too much.

I cant see how the viewing angle is going to make much difference?
Its a tablet you hold in your hand infront of you?
Even if you use the keyboard, your still facing it directly.

Bart, check out the HP Slate. It's probably the most comparable to the iPad.

I'd say any of the tablets running android are comparable, apart from android being better.

I have briefly looked at the slate.
Slightly chunkier, at a guess more heavier, a big downfall is that is running windows.

If I wanted something which I could use for more complicated tasks and need to install specialist software, id probably use the laptop and/or PC.

I think for simple internet surfing, watching videos this will do well, for anything else, there are probably better solutions.

I don't see how it will be any good for watching videos.

You can't watch them flat on a desk and you don't want to hold it up for 2 hours.
