Dell don't care if you add extra memory to the system. 
 
Whether they have memory underneath or not depends on the system, not how new it is. 
 
Some have it underneath, some have it under the keyboard, some have both. 
 
Don't buy it from dell though as advised already, expensive.

Nothing I had under XP has needed to be patched to work in Vista. It was completely hassle free.

Its not under the keyboard on a 1720, I can assure you as Ive had the keyboard off to fix the touchpad

I know with an Apple computer, certain parts are 'User-Servicable' and they don't affect your warranty if you change them. I'd expect another big manufacturer like Dell to follow suit.

I got a new pc a week a go on vista, only thing that has bugged me so far is software , currently going accross the torrent networks getting stuff, problem is some cool apps i used to use just dont work on vista!!
