Hey all. I got the x86 (32bit) version of vista sitting in front of (not a legal copy, only going to use it for testing to see if i like it or not before even considering a purchase). It works fine, doesnt need any activation or a CD key etc etc just wondering whether its worth taking the plunge from my perfect XP install and giving it a go?

My hardware is

4600X2
ATi 1950GT
Creative Audigy LS 5.1
Old Epson printer (might not work with Vista, so thats a key issue)
Havent got anything else that will be affected by Vista's driver issues i dont think, but will software such as my NOD32 AV, Nero burning ROM etc etc still work. No point having an operating system if cant use it for anything

Im usually clued up on this sort of stuff but gone a bit wayward with Vista.

Cheers

I think Vista is a bit of a p**s take tbh - everyone I know has converted back to XP because it's just quicker...!

If you have a super dooper machine go for it

yea i was thinking of doing this but ive had bad experiences in the past with partitioning, wont go there lol

i have read a ton of blogs on the net about people hating it and listing why etc etc, and i refuse to use anymore of those bolt on GUI packs cos they jsut make XP run slower and cause errors etc

argh decisions

or you could try and use it on VPC (virtual pc)

but that might prove just as difficult

Make a new partition, and see that way. No point of screwing up a perfect install.

I had it about 18-20 months ago, but it was really buggy as it was still in the Beta version. I liked the interface, but was slow as hell compared to xp pro.

people do say 'its really slow' etc but tbh I have got a generally fast PC (specs in first post, add 2gb of DDR800 ram to that spec) so it shouldnt fail at all, the way i look at it is, if a laptop can run it without me wanting to throw it against the wall im sure a desktop can

I had it on a partition alongside xp for a while but never used it because I had everything installed on xp. my comp recently banjaxed itself so did a fresh install of vista, I like it but does take a while to get used to, and it always seems to be loading something which im not sure about, maybe finding it bit slower to use, hopefully updates may sort that, ive got a decent spec, dual core 2gb ram etc

I migrated mainly for the new version of Media Center and less buggy support of dual-core CPUs. It crawls with 1Gb, but 2Gb is fine.

Also change the amount of disk space used for volume shadowing (vssadmin command line tool) as 15% of your disk space disappears over time

tbh, at the moment it won't perform the same as XP so in my opinion you're slowing your machine down for no reason. i went back to XP because i was just wasting resources i had

Vista eats up all the resources it can get, then frees them up straight away if needed.

What is the point of you being able to sit on the desktop and say oh, i've got 40% memory free, brilliant.

what are you on about? i dont "sit on the desktop and say oh, i've got 40% memory free, brilliant."
i was stating that vista runs a lot better with 2gb of ram rather than 1.
brilliant

I beg to differ I was running on 1Gb and it became a completely different system on 2Gb (Athlon X2 4600+).

i can second that. the media center is 100% better imo.
I did as mentioned above, ran vista on a seperate HD on my main PC, eventually like it and converted to it. then installed vista on my media pc in the lounge.

The only reason I can see you would want to go to vista is so you can run DX10 games.

i was thinking about upgrading to vista tbh, im running;

amd x2 dual core 5600+
nvidia gefore 7950 GT 512mb
2gb corsair xms2 5400c4 memory (possibly going to 4gb)
Infinity NF Ultra2-m2 mobo
Corsair 520w PSU

Tbh I just like the look of the new interface - Ive heard from alot of people that it is pretty slow and munches the resources. Is there any good alternative option to changing the GUI for XP as I used to use StyleXP, but Im running XP X64 and it doesnt seem to like StyleXP lol
