Think of sonar in submarines etc. it sends a ping out and if another submarine or whatever is there you get a response telling you how far away it is, similar concept with pinging a server from your computer, if your computer sees the server your computer will tell you how long it took to get a response. Low ping = fast connection, high ping = slow connection.

Have you got your modem or router connected to a main telephone socket or an extension from the main line? I only ask because I had an extension fitted from my main line into my bedroom and it seriously affected my connection speeds. I was getting really frustrated at 100kb/s so I plugged my router straight into my main telephone line in the house (which is in my kitchen) and it's now at about 7700kb/s on a 8mb AOL line.
That sorted it out for me. You've probably not got it plugged in to an extension but just thought I'd ask. I can't believe such a simple thing as fitting 25m of extension cable (probably of low quality or something) can limit the speed so much.

Also i'd do a SpeedTest to the London server rather than the Maidenhead, as your connection will mostly go via the London DataCentre (warehouses full of servers) before it reaches the Maidenhead SpeedTest server - ie: it might provide a more accurate result.

Jambo, you tried turning off all other PCs just so you know 100% definately that they arent using any of the bandwidth? If thats not possible, then try installing something like bandwidth monitor pro on them, then that way you can see straight away how much traffic each box is creating.

That's a joke Jambo.
I'd recommend
http://www.ukfsn.org/business/internet/adsl/maxallowance.html
I'm on a home package and drunkenfool was just taking out the business one, not even close to 700 a year.
If you still get crap speeds it's either in your house or ukfsn will chase up bt.

when you download at 47 kb/s that is 470k connection... so 512k connection only allows you to download at 51-56kb/s in reality
it's still a joke though why you are paying so much for that.

Got to remember, it's a business connection, so the contention will be lower and probably has a few addons like satic ip addresses etc.
But yes, it is pretty expensive for a 512k line. You can pick up a 20Mb business (NTL:Business) connection for £50 a month and can get ADSL business accounts cheaper (although they do seem to have bandwidth caps).
to be honest, i would just get a household account (if the offices are at home), certainly would be cheaper. And for the price their paying you could afford for a 2nd connection for backup (or load balancing if you get a router that supports it).

1st day today with UKFSN and the download speeds seem about the same as before Upload is now up to around 700+kbps though. Ive just written to them to see if they can help sort out the download speed though

Easynet want an extra £5 a month for a static IP address. Plus IO had countless DNS problems with them, not being able to reach our own schoo website, ebay, hp.co.uk amung other sites using their DNS servers, using ANYONE elses no problems
