gsi is pre ecotec and later gsi's and sports are ecotec which means they are slightly more restrictive to meet emission tests or some crap like that

the early GSi's which had the black plastic inlet manifold were the C16XE lumps with 109BHP.

the later GSis and sports were X16XE lumps with 106BHP

the difference is, the X16XE has smaller exhaust valves where as the C16XE has valves 80% the size of the C20 XE engine, the X16 XE has EGR which restrics the engine too, the C16 XE seems to respond to tuning allot better than the later X16 XE, the C16XE is a bit old now but get a minter and ya laughing, my C16 XE is pusjing close to 140BHP now and when i drop in the re-built motor its gonna be over that cos its got ported polished head lightened and balanced etc

there are some ecotec Gsi's.

I thought the c16xe/x16xe and x14xe had the same valves.

Slightly better ports of the c16xe and no egr. Slightly different exhaust cam profile IIRC.

Balancing wont give you more power.

The C16xe and x16xe/x14xe also have different injectors, and an airflow meter rather than a map sensor.

You know fuck all then. The C16XE engine is superior to the X16XE. It may only have 3 extra BHP, but its 3BHP in the right place. Torque for the X16XE peaks at around 105lb/ft at 4k RPM, but the C16XE has 110 lb/ft at 3500RPM. This means peak torque is reached sooner, allowing the car to accelerate more rapidly. Peak power on the other hand is indentical, with both being reached at around 5500RPM. Also, there is a different compression ratio in the C16XE than the X16XE of 11.0:1 rather than 10.5:1. The bore and stroke are both the same IIRC. Also, the GSi looks far nicer than the Sport.

The difference between engines is due to the difference in the compression ratio and EGR. Block the EGR and get a thinner head gasket to increase the CR or just skim the Head.
You'll get the same results.
