What would you personally go for?
Im an 8v man all the way.
16v engines are over-rated and way too much hassle with unreliability being their worst point.

dunno had a 1.4 8v mk3 astra & 1 st & 2nd were nt to bad now i have the gsi 16v its alright 1st is poor

Obviously 16v, otherwise they would make cars available in 8v, 16v is better performing, better economy, smoother and less noisy. In a few years no cars will be made in 8v form.
By 8v i mean 2 valves per cylinder as apposed to 4 valves per cylinder, so come 6 cylinder cars will be 12v, and others will be 24v

16v are better performing but the reliabilty is far worse than an 8v - you can do a lot more work on a 8v yourself and i find them stronger engines, the 16v's are dainty.
As for smoother - id say completely the opposite - the torque curve is far too radical and 16v engines are noisier too - put your foot down in a 16v engine and an 8v and listen to the difference.

Funny... had 2 16V cars... done about 40k in both of them conbined... never ONCE had a mechanical problem with either.

Ive had 4 cars three 8v's and one 16v.
every 8v was sound as a pound - never had one problem, has the GSi and it was riddled with them - the result was me loosing 2000 quid on it and getting rid coz it was totally uneconomical to fix - an 8v would have been cheap in comparison.

How can you compare them then??
Try owning 2x 16V and 2x 8V then maybe youre views will change.
I've had 3 8v and 2 16V and i just tended to rag the 8V's but the 16V are a lot more drivable and you can use the revs to make the car perform right(if you get what i mean  )

I think its a fair comparison - i had 4 cars - the only one that was sh!t was the 16v one!

Valve lifters, porous head, MAS went as well.
The car was serviced at vauxhall every time as soon as it was due and did mainly motorway miles.

First time ive ever heard of a porous head on a 16xe, valve lifters did they give up or go noisy?

cams wear out fast on an 8v do they not? oh and that soddin cam cover gasket

Porous heads arnt that rare on GSi's just that it doesnt always cause problems. Valve lifters were sticking .
Going back to the head - its so much more for a 16v head than it is an 8v..
