Firstly, i have tried signing up to two VAG sites but both say i'm in the que for moderation.

Basically bought a Bora TDi 130 6 speed today. It's a PD engine, now the car drives very well at low RPM round town etc. But when trying to pull up a hill or over take taking the revs above 3,000 etc any of these scenarios it will throw it into limp mode, turn it off and back on and it's fine till you do the same again...

Anyone have any ideas as i know theres a few VAG owners on here ?

Cheers

Alternativly, if anyone is registered on a VAG forum and could post this up on there for me and link me to thread it would be greatly apprciated.

Thanks Rob

I had similar when I had a Boost Leak on my old PD170 Octavia

It would boost, then cut all power once it hit 3.somethingK revs. Would reset the EML once the ignition was switched on/off, then repeat the process.

My leak was pretty major though, a hose completely split for its full length, and the noise was ridiculous!

Ah my noise doesn't change at all just the loss in power.

The only other thing I can think of, from my experience with my Skodarse, was an issue with the DPF, but from memory, the PD130 doesn't use them does it?

When my DPF got clogged due to a manufacturing issue with the Regen Cycle Control, it flagged up the EML and DPF Lights, and put it into limp mode, keeping revs at a max of 3.5K

No noticeable differences in low down power or noises etc, seemed normal up to the limited revs.

But, as i say, that probably doesn't apply on a PD130...

I assume you've not got a copy of VAG com either. Might be handy to invest as you can get a cable and software off ebay for about £10 or less. Can help you scan for faults and clear codes etc.. Not going to help now but worth considering in the future.

Most limp mode issues are either coilpacks or MAF's. I don't think you'll have coilpacks but faulty MAF could be the culprit. That should bring on a CEL or light on the dash though

MAF doesn't always bring on a CEL, mine didn't.

Unplug the MAF and check if the engine runs any better.

Cables that work with VAG Com properly are £50, but the software is then free to download.

What do you mean properly antnee?.
Mine can be used to read, clear and change values. Not sure what else a more expensive cable can do??

VAG com will probably say its over boosting.

Quite probably clogged turbo vanes.

Try running some fuel additive as I had friend with the same issue and it solved it for him. If its not a boost leak, then it might be time for a new / reconditioned turbo. Turbo will cost circa £400

The software isn't free to download and the only place you can get a proper cable is either ross-tech or a distributor. Anything outside of that is a copy that only works with 409 and theres only one place I've found that sells fake cables that work with the newer versions.

It's downloadable yes, it's not free though.

A limited 409 version does work with the ebay cables although your supposed to pay, everything else you can download but doesn't work unless you have a paid for cable.

I'll try unplugging the MAF first as thats quite easy.

I've read it could be boost leak, dodgy N75 valve, actuator getting stuck or MAF so far. God bless VAG

Thats a vauxhall, this is about a Bora!! I know a boost leak won't put it into limp mode cos I have a boost leak! Also friends have had boost leaks without going into limp mode

John- software is free, but is activated with a genuine cable. Hence why I said you need a proper cable for VAG Com to work fully. Some of the ebay cables will let you read and clear codes but you cant run logs and do other stuff

Anyway, its not a boost leak, as max boost is around 2k, not 3k.

As my mate said, check the turbo out, could be something to do with the vains

A bad enough Boost Leak WILL put it into Limp Mode - I was having mine go into Limp when the Intercooler inlet hose split its full length on my PD170 - new hose fitted and ECU Reset via software cleared it

It would boost fully, hit full pressure, hold it for a couple of seconds, then you would lose all power, have limited revs, a flashing EML, a flashing Emissions Lamp, and lose all audible evidence of the turbo spooling, suggesting a solenoid or similar shutting off.

what is limp mode?

is that when the turbo doesnt work?

ive got a mate with a mk4 golf tdi 130 and fairly often the turbo doesnt work.

turn it off and back on then it will be working again, is this the same problem?

would be interesting to find out how to fix it..

Haven't had chance to try anything yet but hopefully will soon, first port of call is to replace all vac hoses and unplug the MAF see if either of those sort it. If not change the N75 and lastly do a boost leak test
