air mass sensor maybe. Mine lost all power and couldn't rev past 3k, no turbo nothing. It could be a vacuum pipe has come off as well. Which is what happened to mine. Fitted a new one and wash wish woosh power was back

Sounds nasty

Are turbo diesels without the turbo working slower than what they would be if they were a non-turbo engine?

all turbo engines are, while off boost they run at very low compression

Is it a mk4 golf? The boost pipe comes off if the clip is not on properly, it may look on properly but if you turn it 180degrees it works better (thats if it wasn't on properly)

Hmmm went out in it just a little while later & it was back to normal

Something must have made it go into limp mode then?

I'm suggesting it may be his MAF sensor playing up. If it works fine right after switching the engine off and switching it back on, I'll bet a pound that it IS the MAF
