My step-dad is decorating his front room and I've decided to take a few pictures of how it transforms. I originally made the thread for the DIY section on AVForums, but I know a few of you are into AV and will find it interesting.

We started out with a basic CRT setup. We have been decorating the rest of the house, but finally it's time for the living room.

Bought a new Pioneer 60" KURO, Tannoy wall and ceiling speakers (7.1), Quad 22L's fronts and centre, and a Quad L2 subwoofer.

Also going to be running the required cables for a projector for the future.

Going to have 2 false walls, and a false ceiling.

Should look pretty nice when done -- looking for comments as always.

This is the rear wall. There was a chimbley there before, but that has been knocked down prepared for the false wall build:

This is where the front will be. The cupboard is going to be an entrance to the AV gear from behind. The cupboard has been knocked through and extended. The door to the right is the entrance to the hallway, and that door frame has just been built as it was in a completely different place before:

Ceiling ripped down, and sound deaden'd, ready for false ceiling build:

Some of the lighting that will be in the room:

Rear false wall being built... Holes and cable left for the Tannoy in-wall speakers:

And plaster boarded up:

Began plastering:

Nearly done:

Speakers fitted so they can be run in (and provide music for the rest of the build). These sound absolutely superb for rears:

False ceiling being built. It's going to be lower either side, and higher in the centre (in line with the TV and speakers):

False ceiling being built. It's going to be lower either side, and higher in the centre (in line with the TV and speakers):

We've now scrubbed the idea of the 50" KURO and gone and ordered a Pioneer PDP-LX608D 60-inch 1080p KURO.

Realistically the room is too small for a projector, and it seems pointless spending thousands just to get a 77" projected image -- might as well spend a tad more on a bigger panel.

Next was to hard wall either side (an absolute pain because the walls are so uneven), and to finish plastering the ceiling and walls:

You can see that the AV rack is starting to form shape:

Some paint and lighting being installed...

Oh and a little parcel arrived...

Bit of a scare with the lights -- all working perfectly now.

Getting ready for the false wall...

...and home-made wall bracket in progress:

Things will be slowing down a bit as we've just bought a restaurant, and unfortunately that has to take priority. Managed to fit the ceiling speakers and prepare/paint the wall ready for the build.

I'll try and get some pictures of the lights when it's dark as the current pictures really don't do them justice -- they're absolutely stunning.

I'll keep this updated as it progresses.

I've seen your threads on AV Forums but I don't post much on there, just read.
That is looking like something very special! I love the vertical spot lights on the sides of the false ceiling. And that Pioneer screen... I want one!

Heh, I'd like one too. Mine looks like a little monitor compared to it. It weighs 9 stone! I don't normally post anywhere else other than AVForums, but seems like there's quite a few AV guys on here who might show an interest. Thanks for your comment.

Can't wait until it's on the wall so we can calibrate it.

The good thing about 8G Pioneer's is that they don't require any running in like most plasmas do.

Cheers guys -- hopefully we can get the little jobs done in the restaurant so we can finish this. It's agony knowing all the gear is upstairs in the bedroom waiting to be cabled in!

Looks a very nice build mate, are you doing it yourself?

Not keen on the lighting, just makes the ceiling look a bit 'busy' with everything in.
Very impressive though

Yeah, it's just a family thing.

You wouldn't normally be looking at the lighting. There's 20 different modes and I put it on a mode which means most of the lights are on just so I could get a picture. When watching the TV in the evening barely any will be on.

I'll get pics when it's all done and you'll understand -- it'll probably only be the rear lights on most of the time.

Should have the lights hooked up to the DVD player, so that when you press play on it, the lights fade to dim like in the cinema

And there should be exits signs showing the quickest way to the kitchen for snacks

We have a Harmony 1000 for our remote control, so we can easily do lighting effects like that when you push "Play DVD" (or Blu-ray, in our case... ).

More bracket stuff... It really is a work of art and cost a fraction of the price compared to a lot of those on the market! It has its own shelf, so even if you pull both bars out it'll just sit there... It'll make it very easy getting it in and out of the wall.

QED HDMI's...

...and the new Quad CD player arrived:

Next up is to do the finishing touches on the wall and ceiling and get that painted...
