Dvi doesn't carry audio, if you are using dvi anywhere in the chain it won't give audio.

if you have hdmi-hdmi cable, hdmi on both the laptop and the tv I don't understand what you are using dvi for or where tbh.

As John said, if you going from DVI to HDMI or HDMI to DVI then it won't carry audio. Even if it's HDMI from the laptop to HDMI on the TV there is a good chance it won't carry audio (depends on the laptop, might be an option somewhere to change it - RTFM!).

Easiest solution, 3.5mm jack to phonos

is the socket on the Laptop HDMI or DVI? (got make/model of said laptop?)

Like i say, it's possible that the HDMI on your laptop isn't feeding any sound. Could be as simple as a checkbox somewhere in the settings. But it's quite common, especially on Graphics card that have HDMI ports, that if you don't feed it sound (either via an internal header on the board or via an external 3.5mm socket) then it doesn't carry the audio down the cable.

Yep thats my bet. Most of the time it will be a software thing, but (especially on a laptop) it could well be a hardware matter.
