Like i say, it's possible that the HDMI on your laptop isn't feeding any sound. Could be as simple as a checkbox somewhere in the settings. But it's quite common, especially on Graphics card that have HDMI ports, that if you don't feed it sound (either via an internal header on the board or via an external 3.5mm socket) then it doesn't carry the audio down the cable.

hdmi output. brand new hp jobby. where would i find checkbox?

Yep thats my bet. Most of the time it will be a software thing, but (especially on a laptop) it could well be a hardware matter.

As John said, if you going from DVI to HDMI or HDMI to DVI then it won't carry audio. Even if it's HDMI from the laptop to HDMI on the TV there is a good chance it won't carry audio (depends on the laptop, might be an option somewhere to change it - RTFM!).

Easiest solution, 3.5mm jack to phonos

i dont understand why this is?

xbox 360 goes from xbox to tv on one hdmi cable n that carries sound?
