Compared to a VW engine they are all shit. No ecotec has 400k on the clock and is still running

My Sport had an X16Xe fitted. It was a cracking engine when it ran properly. It just didn't like to do that most of the time. Too much electronic bollocks.

personal opinion but i have had two x16xe's thier ok but both bottem ends have gone reulting in big holes
they seem to be very soft off what i have learnt think i will stick with my c20xe

Brilliant engines, although this engine hasen't been as good as my last one, I still they're fantastic engines, if you look after them, like any other engine.

From my experiance, the older X16XE's are a better engine

good engine

drove mine like a cnt for a year, never let me down

started to smoke a little, but all engines smoke eventually if driven within an inch of their deaths - only stem seals, so not a big job or issue!

the old hg showed no signs of wear either around the piston bores, or any issues with gallery contamination & shit like that - was just like new when the head came off (after being stood for almost 2 years aswell)

cracking little engine, but I still agree with Dean_W - too much reliance on electronical bullshit!

I never had a problem with my F15, or my F13.

I know of someone else who has a powerful car with an F15 and it's fine too

I was having issues with my F15, but an oil change sorted that

although speedo cables & senders can go tits up (as mine is now)

Oh yeah, fuel pump is pretty fucked aswell... but again its not down to any fault of the engine!

The are very good little engines, jsut restricted a LOT in standard form. Not many other engines were running 150bhp from a 1.6 16v in 1992!!!!!!!! The basic engine design is now 15 years old!!!!!!!!!!!!

I disagree with acomment about the X16 being the better engine to build. Andy H ran various forms of engine tuning (M-box all the way to TB), and the C16 engines ALWAYS ran more power in the same spec.

Also, SBD only got 240bhp ish from the X16. They bought Donnas old C16 off her, and a few months later, had got 256bhp from it. The C16's are the better engine due to the head/port design, but in standard format were let down by small issues, like dodgy tensioners, pistons that were too smal and fried the rings etc.. Never heard about Swindon getting 256 from the 1.6 engines, they never really produce "power figures" like SBD.

I've seen a 1.4 16v running neigh on 200bhp as well. And another one (Don Fulfords friends) running 160bhp at the wheels!!!!!!! Full spec'd engine.

The C16's mostly wore out due to the incorrect pistons they put in there... Clever Vauxhall

And also, my 1.4 16v Head Gasket also went. As did the oil pump gasket, but we found I had the early paper gasket, whcih was replaced for a metal one when we changed it. Only had the car for 2 weeks Grrrrrr. Still, after that, then the HG, it always ran like a dream, and was very used and abused!

Very good little engines. THe onyl ones that are better i'd say are the Honda engines, and about on par is teh Saxo/GTi engines. Produce more power out the bx, but at full spec tuning, they deliver very similar power/torque.

Also, the 2.0 ecotec engines are good for 200+bhp on TB. They run 280bhp with a restricted inlet in the BTCC, and even the redtops only ran just around 300bhp with no restrictions. (although the new engine is a destroked 2.2).

will last a 150k looked after ive heard...if u drive them hard 110k as robin said lol...i think they are a very reliable engine...compare them with others and they gud!...the fact that they are resticted will only make them last longer...depends wot u want the car for like...ive had a X14XE for 8 months or so not had a single problem...driven hard at times but dont ragg it everywhere like...only had to do 1 oil change...its done 8500 with me with no problems anyway

Don't start on vauxhall gearboxes! They ARE good. I had Alan Cookson come into work here and he said the F20 is his favourite box to work on, and he has built some ledgendary bespoke motorsport boxes.

my gearbox was ace, so much better than the saxos even though my saxo one is very tight the vauxhall just feels more precise.

saxo gear linkage is better mind

but GM boxes are decent
