not particularly great engines but not particulalry bad engines, underpowered from the factory due to restrictions, even when you remove the restrictions there are better engines out there, the civic vti being one

my tuned 1.6 was a joke. power right up in the revs, gutless up until then.

its an average engine imo. there is worse and there is better.

I always have been impressed with the 1.4 16v even though I thought they were pretty prone to HG failure!

On the internet, every engine is unreliable as people only say something when they've had a bad experience with one, like with buying from a mail order company, no-one ever says "yeah, they were fantastic"

They're only underpowered as they're restricted heavily, much the same as Ford's Sigma, Renaults 1.6 16v is cack, it's only the PSA one which is any good, oh, and the Honda B16, but that's obviously the case

I think they're great, I don't know of another 1.6 engine which can give you a reliable 8500rpm, 190bhp and all on standard bottom end internals (other than Honda ones) That to me says it's a good engine

[Edited on 25-06-2007 by Robin]

Agreed.
And you cant compare them to hondas b16, as they "cheat" with a 2nd set of cam lobes

Thats a completely unfair comparison. 9k revs, and cams made for high revs....

A lot of people say that

Mine (both) were fine for ages, in fact, I don't know of anyone who had HG trouble with one.

I'm not saying it's the best engine in the world, there are definitely better engines, but as little engines go, it's not as bad as some people make out IMO.

If you have a bad experience, you're bound to think it's shit, everyone does that I had 2 great engines (one had done over 90k), so all my experience is great

I wouldn't say better, id say differently, im sure a 16xe with good cams, and a proper inlet, and the ability to rev to 9k, it wouldn't be far from a b16

Its like comparing a 6000rpm 8v, with a standard cam, to a 9000rpm revving 8v with a race spec cam(which is basically what the vtec stage is)

They are, yes, but that doesn't make the Vauxhall engines bad

Honda make good engines, very good engines.

Corsa sport/gsi was never a real hot hatch though tbh, just slightly "warm" lol
Whereas the honda lump is designed for performance, im sure without having vtec/the rev range it would be no different than a gm 1.6 16v.
And look at the hondas torque, it may be able to rev like fcuk, but thats exactly what needs doing to get it move, as it makes naff all torque.
