Illegal - yes, Computer Misuse Act

If the router is open you need an IP address either assigned by DHCP (useful) or manually which needs either inside knowledge acquired through listening, or guesswork. Its probably DHCP though, most are left wide open.

When you have an IP get something like Superscan to browse the subnet see what other devices are on there, then open an UNC share to the foreign IP, and append c$ for hidden c: drive share which will be there by default, ie.

Start -> Run -> \\192.168.1.2\c$

You'll need to authenticate, which will most likely be something crap like her first name with no pass.

You can listen to network traffic and discover more, depends how long much community service you actually want to do.

If it's XP Home, then Administrator as the username with no password might work.
