I have the following set up

1 x Wireless Laptop
1 x Wireless Router connected to Cable Modem
1x Desk top wired to Router port 1

How do I go about setting up a network that lets my Laptop see the files on the Desktop and use the printer that is attached to the Desktop??

Can only find answers on the net for all wireless networks and that dosent seem to work for my set up.

Any help?

you would need to install network cards I think Assign the laptop an ip address and then enable internet connection sharing. This will let you browse the files and folders as well.

not too sure to be honest

Tried that.

When I go in to my network it shows the domain and when I click on that (to show the computers) it says I dont have permission and that I should contact the administrator

make sure they are on the same workgroup and then right click on a folder you want to share and go to security and sharing. Select share this folder then go to My Network Places on the other machine and it will be there.

theres a 64 digit randomly generated acces code (win xp) try re-setting up the network, print everything it asks you to print and you'll have the code, if the code doesn't work knock the last digit off and try again

Didnt woek.

On laptop clicked on Network Places>view Workgroup

It thought about it for 30 sec than said that Workgoup is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource

i think you may need Professional. Hence why you're getting the admin errors coming up.

I could be wrong though.

Have you "set up home or small office network" via My Network Places?

Yes. Set it to share files and printers and run the network disk on all the computers. Still not working

Run it again but select do nothing instead of make a network disc. I have a similar setup and it works on mine.

Done that first and it didint work then done it again about 5 times.

Both PC's can acess the net through the router. They just cant see each other to share files and printers

You do NOT need Internet Connection Sharing. Your router is doing this job. Turn that off on the computers.

Is the issue with file sharing that you can't physically see the other computer, or that you can but you do not have permission to open anything?

You don't actually need pro - can't be done with home by opening things up a bit more, which isn't the wisest move in the world given that you're wireless.

Out of interest, do a Start -> Run and type cmd on one, then ipconfig, get IP address, then go to the other and do another Start -> Run, and go like \\192.168.0.2\c$

Obviously with the right address. Should open a session even if you don't authenticate.

Ipconfig seems to just hang on the desktop and dosent display an Ip address.

I know its IP is 168.192.2.2 but if i try and get it to ping it self it also hangs.

Tried to map a drive to the IP address and that also but that just sat at attempting to connect.

Noton Personal Firewall was the answer. It was blocking all network traffic, reconfigured it and bobs your uncle
