I am afraid my head gasket has gone. I have searched the forum and it seems to be a fairly easy (but long) work for the 1.4 8V. I have never done it before, so here it goes my silly question:

I always thought of the head gasket of being a very cheap rubber seal, but people have mentioned 80 quid for parts, what is the rest????

Also, quite important, where do you buy it?? Vauxhalll??

Your looking at these parts with approx prices:

Head gasket 15
exhaust/inlet manifolds 5 each
Head bolts 1 x10
Cam belt 15
Rollers/idlers?
Oil 10
Filter 3
Water pump? 15

Those prices might need vat adding, and might be cheaper as I've only ever bought 16v parts, not 8v's....

You dont need all of that to change the head gasket, but whilst its in bits you may as well replace other parts else you'll have to strip it again to replace them at some stage.

You want to get it from www.autovaux.co.uk for cheapness.

if that engine is an OHC ... armed with a haynes an ALL THE RIGHT PARTS it should be easy enough.

Does the head not need to be skimmed?

Yeah if I would advise anyone replacing the head gasket to get the head skimmed otherwise it is likely it will happen again.

I wouldnt neccesarily get a vauxhall headgasket no point.
You local motor factors will probably use payen gaskets which are as good if not better than OE. No point buying a head gasket by the head set complete. Then you will get the manifold gasket rocker cover gasket etc. Some head sets even include the bolts. Definitely get the head skimmed while its off.

I wouldnt say 500 is neccesarily dear on a 1.4 16v for service and headgasket but its definitely top end of the scale!

right, jus got the car back.

he charged me 10 hours labout coz he had some major problems gettin the head off! i was a bit pissed off bout this because i shoudnt have to pay extra because he didnt know how to do it properly!

so 10 hours labout @ 30 an hour = 300

then it was 225 on parts

total 525 inc VAT

How can you have major problems taking the head off? You just unbolt it and lift it off!

agreed, the head just a case of unbolting the head bolts, removing the cam-cover on the left of engine, removing exhaust & inlet manifolds & sliding head off - most it ever took me was about an hour cos I had a bacon butty & cup'o'tea.

plus 225 on parts? what exactly they replace? I know for a fact a headgasget kit (head gasget, inlet/outlet manifold gasgets, rocker-box gasget, cam oil seel o ring thingy, various other gasgets, valve stem oil seals, etc...) costs around £25 at trade price... cambelt is about £25, head bolts be about £10.. so reckon about £70 parts, depending if they replaced the water pump or not...

at that price I'd expect a replacement cylidner head!

hell in 10 hours I'd be able to remove the engine, replace the head gasget, water pump, etc... re-fit it, fill it with oil & coolant & still have time fr a cuppa!
