nope it was definately the head gasket

just took the exhaust off, lifted the head off the locating pins and pushed it out the way while i cleaned the head and block faces, changed the gasket then put the head back on

risky i know because i should have checked to see if it needed skimming, however its going ok so far

you'd get a whole car for that or another engine to replace it get a friend in a garage to do it or enquire for someone nearby to help out for a smaller price. i'd never pay that for a head gasket on a 1.4 only paid 150 for ma xe to get timing belt, crank sensor, crank seal, hydraulic lifters, full service and clutch fitted. obviously i paid for the parts.
