This is a question for a friend.

A Vauxhall garage has told my friend that her head gasket has gone, they have told her it will be £500 to replace.

The car is a 1.4 16V P reg corsa.

I thought that it was far too much, I always thought it was around £150 but I could be wrong, what are your opinions on this then??

Cheers for the help,
Sean.

i think i paid about £250. Make sure she gets the head skimmed as this will stop it from happening again.

Seems expensive, just to replace a head gasket. Admittedly its gonna take a long time to remove all the shit to get to it, and then they might need to skim the head, but it still seems expensive.

Deffinatly worth shopping about

i didn't bother going to vauxhall monkeys as they always rip you off. Better off going to a small garage or doing it yourself

mine is at a small local garage, dont do it urself, u have to tighten the head bolts very carefully - which i didnt on me first car unless u have done it before, or ur car is worth less than 500 quid then let a pro do it

I blew mine on the way back from my MOT, I had it fixed as a foreigner by my MOT guy, but eh also did a full top end rebuild - including polishing/skimming/gas flowing and finally pressure testing the head - replacing the thermostat; gaskets ( head&rocker etc) cambelt, pre tensioners; oil; antifreeze, filters, studs ( very important that this is done) and numerous other things, hes free'd up a slight amount of extra power and the engine bay looks immaculate - got quoted £400 where he works and £500 odd from vaux - he did it for £180 and a few pints in the pub where I work

First definitely have the head skimmed as you will find it has blown between no 4 cylinder and the water jacket and if you dont have it skimmed it will go again.

Second dont try doing it yourself, if youve never done anything like this before then a 16v corsa is far from the best thing to start practicing with.

Price wise £500 does seem a bit steep at first. I would say between £250 and £300 for headgasket done properly on a 1.4 16v by a garage. If they are changing cambelt and idlers at the same time though then you can add £100 to that in extra parts.

and u should have those parts changed - everytime the studs are taken out or the cam belt is taken off, it should really be changed - so its recommendable to spend the extra

at vaux tho we have to use tis labour times, plus parts. when taking head apart u should really replace, head gasket throttle body gasket, cambelt rollers and tensioner regardless of age, valve stem oil seals, pressure test head skim head head set etc. this is what vauxhall are advised to replace anyway. yes expensive but every1 has make money
