i never once used a dial guage or torque wrench lol

always did hand tight, 3/4, 1/4 and that held well enough!

amature bodge the 2nd? ^^^^

you SHOULD use a dial (angle) guage, and may need a scraper to remove the bits of old gasket....

i always use vaux gasket sealer too (gorilla snot - as vaux call it)

need an angle gauge to tighten the headbolts properly

both tools are available from machine mart for about £5 each

Is it necessary to get the head skimmed as the hg hasnt gone but its loosing coolant slowly(top it up with a pint every 3-4 weeks) and there is small signs of oil in the coolant(Slight film on the top of the coolant)

still be worth taking it just to make sure its true & flat.

inspection alone is worth the money to save having to do it again a few hundred miles down the road...

always get the head skimmed whenever its removed. even if its a few thou of an inch out at some point it wont seal properly. plus the gasket WILL be stuck to the head and you will never get it all off without a good skim. Remember you need to remove the cams, followers and bearings to get it skimmed

remove the headbolts in the correct sequence as well! otherwise it can damage the head and lead to snapped headbolts.
