Most likely reason is a corrupted hardware-driver......next time it happens, make a note of the file-name or piece of hardware it gives as the cause of the crash.

ive only had xp for a few days in that time its done it bout 8 times alltogether
startin to piss me off
all singing all dancing top spec pc!
i dont xpect it to fuck up as often as this!

It's normally something uve changed on ur system, ie installed something maybe even detached hardware, or a physical hardware prod with ur comp.
Have u installed anything lately?

i only got it a day ago
er i installed lots of stuff today
kazaa, norton anvirus, my bb modem, my pc screen, and about to install norton firewall, digi cam 1 digi cam 2, printer,
u think im pushing it a bit hard?
i thought a 2.6 ghz pentium 4 could cope?

98 was best
200opro hardly ever crashed but whenit did it was dead
i thinkits teething probs

XP is really really fuckin sensitive to machines CPU temperatures exceeding 50c. I used shatloads of thermal paste (not the paste that comes with the fan) and a huge coolermaster copper base heatsink. I also bought copper blocks for my ram. Doesnt crash at all now.

i hated that pile of shite! prefered 95 to that! at least that just sat in the background and dint interfere!

windows 95 is just 32-bit extensions and a graphical shell for a 16-bit patch to an 8-bit operating system originally coded for a 4-bit microprocessor, written by a 2-bit company that can't stand 1-bit of competition
Win98 SE was the best version of Windows, 2k was good (far better than NT4 if you prefer a true 32bit OS), and XP is 'ok' but prone to breaking if your not 100% on how it works (home that is, pro is much better!).
I think micysoft have released a few duff-updates lately over winblowsupdate.com so maybe it could be that? I know I've certainly had a few probs with the last 2 weeks, even on a completely fresh install once I ran windows update!!

I have not had to reinstall XP since I bought the PC (December 2001). Mind you I had to do a system restore once because I tried to run Apache web server/MySQL server/PHP and it fucked it up somehow!

Also do you have Service Pack One installed? You can get this on CD for free from microsoft.com (which is what I did if you don't want to spend ages downloading it).

I use IIS, MySQL & PHP with no probs on my laptop, fekin hate the win32 port of Apache so is why I aint usin it

Remove the stupid messenger popup service in 2k/XP
Click Start, then Run. Type the following command
services.msc /s
Click OK. In the Services dialog, scroll down to Messenger, and double-click it to show the properties. Click the Stop Button, and then set the Startup Type to Disabled

Also the patch from Microsoft (the Symantec removal tool isn't enough on its own, you need to patch the RPC to close the vulnerability)...
