You can damage a Windows installation beyond repair with official commercial software and closing the app down wont fix the problem. I used to do tech support for SolidWorks and the amount of times people would call up with a lunched registry was unbelievable. Not an issue with a Mac, but I'm standing by my opinion that shit software is shit and can wreck your computer and you can obtain shit software for free from a porn site or for £20k from an official reseller.

Not at all. The cost vs performance is pretty high were you compare a workstation from the likes of HP or Dell to a (new) Mac Pro and it further widens if you need to use expansion cards as it leaves you in the position of either replacing all of your outboard gear or purchasing thunderbolt expansion caddies (neither option is particularly cheap).

It's why a lot of studios are moving away (or in the process of moving) from Mac/OSX and on to Windows and Windows variants of software. And the only reason i know this is because i've had the exact same conversion with my best friends who are either editors at Sky (they've moved from Avid on to Adobe, with a lot of systems being Windows) or BBC or are audio engineers at Angel, Abbey and other studios in the city.

And i have nothing against Mac's or OSX (i've been using them near enough daily since OS9) as they have there place; but they certainly aren't the holy grail bandwagon'ers make them out to be.

There's been a handful of cases of malicious apps bypassing Apple's vetting due to code obfuscation, so it isn't a full-proof solution.

I suspect the half-bitten logo on the back plays a huge part in the amount of 'love' for the machine; just like having Hunter written on a welly

My users tend to find a way to fubar their Macs on a weekly-basis, so i'm not sure i agree with you there

Plus being 'idiot proof' can hinder 'power' users with functionality and options not being easily accessible.

Strongly disagree, my old man just bought a high end Dell Alienware (LGA2011) system with twin GTX770's for just over £2,200 quid.. Its pretty much on par with (maybe slightly better than) a entry level MacPro granted the Mac Pro hasn't got a display but the one that shipped with the Dell wasn't exactly breath taking.

The Mac will actually have a value in 3 years though where as the Dell will be nearly worthless.

I never said it didn't happen! But the chances of you fucking your PC are significantly higher than a mac.

Alienware are gaming systems (GTX cards clearly give that away) rather than workstations and apart from game design/testing, they typically wouldn't be used in professional industries.
As said, compare (new) Mac Pro's against workstations and cost vs performance is different. And if you need to use expansion cards (like a lot of studios, ie - Digidesign/Avid HD cards etc) then you can quite easily double the cost of opting for a new Mac Pro.

Arguable the Mac will EOL quicker due to the lack of upgrade paths, whereas a business could easily extent the life of a PC workstation with little cost.

Not sure about it being 'significantly higher' on a Windows system as it's not particularly difficult to fully fudge OSX, but i'd agree to some extent on this.

Surely you mean the packaging and design rather than physical internal hardware as you can get the same hardware in a PC

But i agree, Apple's packaging of hardware (with the exception of the new Mac Pro which is mind boggling pointless as a workstation) tends to be pretty damn good.

UH? Nvidia cards are widely used by 3D/Video rendering specialists.. Infact Sony Vegas PREFERS NVidia (hence why I'm running Nvidia)..

The Mac stuff ships with AMD because the preferred video software on a Mac is Adobe which is optimised for AMD GPU's.

Yes they are Davey but they'll be Quadro or FirePro cards (professional series) rather than gaming cards like the GTX

And the Adobe suite has always been, and still is, predominantly (Nvidia) CUDA based and it's only been recently Adobe has started up increase OpenCL support for AMD cards. Adobe certainly isn't 'optimised' for AMD cards however.

Used to love it when you'd get some knobber who'd spent a fortune on a GeForce for their CAD workstation phone up and throw a tantrum because they didn't get any hardware acceleration

(By love I mean want to shoot myself in the face)

That'll be why I get better than Real-time 1080p rendering on Vegas using CUDA then?

Out of interest which parts is it that makes it so much difference as I haven't nothing anything myself other than at long last fixing the start menu

So far my fave features are:

* Its optimised for native resolutions (like OSX).
* Metro is gone and the start menu is back (albeit with a metro esque panel which is suspiciously like a Windows phone display).
* When you switch to a 'metro' / 'xbox' type task it doesn't force you to do that drag from the top of the screen bullshit to get rid of it.
* It ships with in-built support for the most popular VPN clients.

And it generally just looks and feels slicker!

One slight annoyance.. Because it now tries to use the max native resolution I found the installation process to be a little bit hard to read!

Likewise, i haven't noticed much other than bringing back a Windows 7-esque 'Start' menu and sticking in multiple desktops. Plus, from what i gather the underpinnings of 10 is the same as 8.1 so there shouldn't any real performance increases - 8.1 was pretty decent anyway.

Edit -

Client support? You mean server support?

Although you can now specify which apps use a tunnel which is handy.
