The 'spark plug' of a diesel engine is the compression itself, so the thing that ignites the fuel is compression. It's a bit like saying petrol is the ignition source in a gasoline engine when it is in fact the coil pack, ht leads and plugs. The way Davey wrote it seemed like he meant the injection of the fuel itself created the bang - saying that, it certainly wouldn't hurt due to the fact the injection would cause even more of a compression.

Traditionally the fuel is delivered at (more or less) the top of the piston's stroke, so it's safe to state that the diesel is both the fuel and the origin of the combustion.

Combustion needs heat, fuel and oxygen. The heat comes from compressing the air, the fuel is the diesel and the oxygen comes from the compressed air.

I know what Jim and ed are saying and I agree with them both. The only slight issue I had was when Davey (probably by mistake since he seems clued up) made out that the injection of the fuel was the ignition source.

I didn't claim it was wrong.... I claimed that davey wasnt wrong.
The injection of the fuel and the compression could be classed as the ignition point depends on how you want to look at it.
Bit of an arsey comment to make to be honest when I agreed with you and davey...
