^ This is what makes skeptical about the whole thing, is the tech really at the stage where it's perfect? What about it degrading over time, have they got round that too?

Or is it because Steve isn’t there anymore to tell them it’s crap they’re just going to put it out anyway.

Reading into the company they bought it looks like the tech has been around for over a year now so expect they have been able to do some pretty extensive testing of it.

We can only wait and see. It will either be a great tool (IMO) or a complete flop and could really damage the brand.

If they were able to get mass adoption of this along with Find iPhone they could really impact the black market of stolen phones

Even if it's great the other 70% of the mobile market will say it's shit anyway.

Not saying they invented it, but have there been any other mobile devices with this type of fingerprint scanner?

And I'm not talking about Lenovo's "slide your finger over this area 10 times, and if you're lucky it'll recognise your print", I'm talking about "push this button and it will instantly verify your fingerprint and unlock the device".

Provided this works somewhat trouble free, isn't this a first off?

I'm guessing that this will also (finally) put an end to that dreadful mechanical home button.
Can anyone verify?

Yup - there have been others - a very similar sensor was in the Fujitsu Regza - strangely the sensor was in the middle of the back of the phone which is not a very natural place for it.

Including hardware is the first challenge but making it usable it the 2nd and arguably most important. It could be the best bit of tech in the world but if you make it a pain to use no-one will.

You are right that they have bought out a security company that specalises in this kind of thing but the home button has been improved over generations of the iphone which is evident in the iphone 4 to iphone 4s upgrade where the buttons are much better and have had well less failures.

I have not heard of a mainstream phone with fingerprint scanner so could be onto something but hey.....may work...may not! Time will tell

Like Rob says it has to work 100% everytime otherwise it will just get turned off, and it actually has to be more secure or at least equivalent to a 4 digit pin.

What's to say it won't be mechanical aswell? What it people want to turn it off?

Perhaps it will double as a capacitive button too which would be cool although I much prefer the feel and feedback you get from a proper button.

Out of 5 iPhones I've never had the sleep button break, what are you doing to them?

Nothing, the steel ring around the button just made me assume it will respond to touch rather than physical pressure.
