That would be a complete waste of time so I doubt it.

I doubt it ever would but lets imagine it worked 100% accurately, would it still be a waste of time?

For example I don't use a passlock on my phone as I cba with putting the pin in everytime, if this was as quick as swiping to unlock, I'd use it.

the thing is it has to work 100% otherwise people just wont use it, i used to have a biometric reader on an old laptop, used it for a few days as was a fad then every other scan wouldn't work first time so resorted to a password which work every time.

speaks someone who obviously has not got a secure passcode on their phone. I would find it bloody useful on my phone as I use it with work which means it has to comply to password rules such as 8 characters long, capitals, numbers, changing every 90 days etc

Like the millions of people with the same thing built into their laptops for years for the same purpose that never actually get used.

It's a stupid idea.

i doubt it too, macbook air may have been a few months ago but the MBP(non retina) is 14 months old. they all have old intel chips in, so wouldnt be beyond the realms of possibility to see them, if not maybe in october

100% gimmick. Like having a password is a chore.

Nath - have you got a password on your phone?

Set a password with 8 characters long, capitals & numbers, autolocks after 10 minutes.

See how annoying it is after a few days and you will find its a pain in the arse. At my work its the number 1 reason people are not using their own phones for work emails/calender.

Is the technology they are looking to use the same as that used in the laptops. From the descriptions of it, it looks slightly different. I agree the tech that has been used in laptops for the last 5/6 years was never reliable

Exactly this.
I remember working in a place that had those IBM laptops (T60's iirc) with fingerprint readers - nobody used them as you'd end up spending more time swiping your finger getting it to read it correctly that typing in a standard ten character password.

Nothing wrong with using a password or swipe pattern (and applying encryption to the device if you're paranoid).

Anti Apple mode already activated eh

Or maybe I might just find it useful...but obviously that not allowed because it might be on an iPhone and we are not allowed to find anything they do helpful. I would have the same opinion for on a Android/Windows phone (provided it worked well)

Where will they fit a fingerprint sensor in? I can't believe even a post jobs Apple would do that.

I should say that i'm basing my gimmick opinion on the sensor being part of the body, which i suspect will be the case.
If, however, it can be built into one of the LCD/OLED display layers (there's been talk of doing this but i don't believe anyone has achieved it yet) and it covers the whole screen then it could be a lot more interesting as not only can it be used for security (read the fingerprint whilst user swipes the standard unlock button etc), it also opens the phone up multi-finger gestures which would be pretty

It has to be part of the screen or nothing else IMO.

Comparing a 1990's implemention on decade old laptops to something Apple will come up with

I don't think it'll be a reality for a while yet however, good article here:

http://weblog.invasivecode.com/post/57447455012/will-a-fingerprint-sensor-be-apples-next-hit

Also, plenty of places for it, behind the LCD, behind the home button, to the side of the home button (on black you wouldn't even see it).
