I've heard it's best to drive em quite hard, or it can go strange and lose performance ??

How do most people drive their DTi's ? What is the best rev range to keep it in ? I thought I read somewhere something about the 'most efficient' rpm ? And it surprisingly wasn't low as possible without struggling- but it was a bit above low , - hopefully that'll make sense to any1 in the know...

The other thing, is it best to rev it high up through all the gears ? I always find myself changing gear way too early, - my eyes glancing on the rev meter see the revs as say 2.8-3.2K, but my ears tell me to change gear anyway! Not that loud at really, I just haven't really got used to driving it as it should be driven yet .

When I got it I ran it in really really softly. But even now, 3 months later, I still dont 'like' to drive it hard. But am I doing it more harm than good by driving it like I am ?

And please no immature comments abusing diesels, or calling em tractors etc etc, it's just not needed !

Diesels are not designed as performace cars, like 1.2's etc. So It wont damage anything to drive it gently, as long as it gets good 10+ mile long runs occasionally.

These are mostly used as shopping trolleys so think how average muppet drives them.

In saying that, as you cant really rev a diesel I cant see it making much difference if you do kane it. I drive my car hard sometimes (petrol), but ALWAYS wait for it to warm up first and change the oil regulary.

cant imagine many people ragging diesels (whats the point all the power is low down the rev range)

all diesels are low-mid range torque so by driving at high revs you are more or less out of the powerband and therefore not getting the best out of it

I hardly ever change gear below 4000 it's not at max boost by then

i always rag the tits out of my TD, its just no fun to drive otherwise. always change after the turbo kicks in

Very helpful. It was pretty much the turbo I was referring to. I'll have to start revving it higher , to get the turbo working better .

Cos after I ran it in really softly, I'd been driving it a calmly for about the next few weeks. 3rd gear used lose performace at about 30 . But then I gave it a good long hard-ish drive, as advised by my dad, and then it all loosened up, and driving in 3rd, I ooked down and it was doing 40, when I thought Id have been doing 30 .

Hopefully it's got some more 'loosening up' to do I reckon.

no power above 4500 rpm, i change then, its quicker than holding out to the rev limit.
all the power on mine is between 2500 and 4500, if you keep it in that power band they go bloody fast.

when i say no power i meen the boost tails off, best changing gear to pick up full boost again.

- So I spose if u change higher up, then by the time u change, there's already going to be higher exhaust emissions, so the turbo will work from as soon as u put ur foot down in that new gear ?

May sound a bit odd, but I reckon what I've been doing is a) changing too early, and b) not even putting my foot down far enough - not creating much emissions ?

its not the emissions which run the turbo mate, its fresh air. yeah u need to rev is higher. you will be able to tell on ures because the boost will tail off at about 4500 rpm. tehre is no point redlining it atall.

i used to drive it so the turbo was always spinning. thats max power

thought all turbos work by exhaust gases spinning the turbines and causes the air to get sucked in and sent back to the engine? getting confused on how fresh air would spin the turbo.

i find the best way is put it in gear,lift clutch,handbrake off n gas
