My stereo has been coming on at different key turns for the past few months.
Now I've kind of narrowed the problem down to the ignition switch. I found this out the other night that when I push the key into the barrel a little it makes the stereo come on regardless of which click the key is turned to. So by pushing the key in a little this seems to activate the stereo.
I've read on other forums that this is the sign of a classic faulty ignition switch.

My question is, should I replace the switch only, or do I need to replace the barrel AND switch?

many thanks for any help.

on the switch there is a wire that feeds power to the C.D player so check it's not lose ect. the switch itself can be taken apart and cleaned but is a pain in the ass as i found out doing mine. but yes i would try changeing just the switch first.

just change the switch unless the key feels rough or stiff with out the switch conected, like any thing with moving parts it can wear out over time.

many thanks for your replies guys.

Am I right in saying that if i'm changing the switch only then this has no impact whatsoever on my key fob immobiliser or alarm, right?

It's not faulty. They all do that on the Corsa B. If you put the key in, don't turn it and push it in and hold the stereo will work.

What are you trying to fix exactly? It doesn't sound faulty.

Ok. Here's the exact problem that's only surfaced in the last few months.

When I turn the engine on, the stereo works sometimes, and at other times it doesn't work.
When it doesn't work it's as if someone has pulled the power out the back of it because it is totally dead. No buttons work, no lights etc.
But I've checked the ISO connectors and they are all fine and connected.

Then at other times the stereo will only work with the key on the first turn (with engine off). And when I turn the engine on the stereo goes off and stays off.

Weird, huh?

I did a bit of reading around on the net and a few people were saying this is a classic example of the ignition switch playing up and thereby causing the stereo to come on at different key turns.

That's why I asked the question about changing just the switch OR the barrel and the switch.

Do you still think this is standard behaviour on the Corsa B and not a fault? Cos it definitely feels a bit dodgy and hassle when you want the stereo on but it refuses to come on.

Can't you try a different ignition live to the stereo? Off the tab lighter or something?

If the ignition switch was faulty you'd have bigger problems than a faulty stereo.

I'm very new to car electrics so I wouldn't know where to start with your suggestion of having a different ignition live.

Hmmm. Maybe another thing to try would be to pull the stereo out and swap 2 wires around to give a perm live. Means you will have to switch the stereo on and off yourself and remember to do it each time you leave the car.

I can't remember the wire colurs though.

Thanks for your suggestions mate.

I noticed today that even when I push the key into the barrel the stereo is still temperamental, i.e. it chooses when to come on etc.
That doesn't appear to be normal.

So I may well order a new switch off ebay for £8 all in and give that a whirl.
