Just got a Mordaunt Short MS308 sub and I intend to use it with my Yamaha RX V567.

However, I think I'm being a bit dumb when it comes to wiring it up.

The rear of the sub looks like:

And the Amp:

And finally the manual:

Is it really as simple as just using a Subwoofer cable from the L and R ports on the Sub to the Subwoofer Pre Out on the Amp? I.e. do I even need conventional speaker cable? I'm only running floorstanders, so no rears/surrounds.

Cool. I just think it's the red and black speaker terminals on the back of the sub which are confusing me.

Sub will take high or low level input but the best one to use is the subwoofer output on the amp, normally into the left channel on the sub.

Running a single cable to either left or right input on the sub from the pre out on the amp should work fine, the sub will detect the mono input and act accordingly.

Some subs will ned a Y-splitter though I believe, so you may need to check the manual.

Whats the difference between using both L&R compared to just one or the other? Or do sub cables such as http://www.richersounds.com/product/hifi-interconnects/cambridge-audio/aud500-7.5m/camb-aud500-7.5m only have one as pictured but on both ends?

BTW I'm definitely not buying the cable in the link

So, all is well. Works just fine, but only when it decodes a signal (I guess), like for now with Apple TV when I rent a film (Dolby Digital). How might I get 2.1 to work when watching 'normal' stuff like Sky HD? If that's even possible.

Also, are there any differences or limitations from running HDMI from my amp to the TV as opposed to an optical cable? That won't have anything to do with my 'problem' will it?

Set up is as follows:

TV > HDMI > Receiver.

Receiver > HDMI > Sky HD
Receiver > HDMI > Apple TV
Receiver > HDMI > PS3
Receiver > HDMI > Xbox360

Receiver > RCA > Sub

That's normal right? I'm not missing a 'trick' or anything?

God my brains hurts

Basically talking to myself but am I right in saying DD isn't available for SKY HD over HDMI? Coax or Optical only? Same for the PS3?

No sub icon on my amp when watching Sky HD. Icon appears when watching Blu Rays on PS3, but PCM only. But Apple TV gets the full works. All three are HDMI.

Ahhh. Don't think sky does dolby over hdmi actually. I have mine wired to my tv via hdmi and to reciever by optical so I don't have to have my reciever on all the time.

Id wire your sky to reciever via optical. To the tv via hdmi 1 then wire your reciever to hdmi 2.

I can live with the sound from the PS3, it's decent enough. Just wanted a bit more from Sky. I have an optical cable knocking about so will have a mooch round the back again. Cheers!

Only one of the Sky boxes actually carries multi-channel audio over HDMI; stupidly they've decided to limit most of the boxes to stereo only via HDMI
So yes, you'll need to use the optical output from the box to your AV amp.

Just a HDMI from your PS3 to the receiever yeah?

Interestly I just pressed 'direct' on my receiver remote and it's come to life! Just doesn't display anything on the display as per my Apple TV. Which says 'Dolby Digital'.

Idiots. I can sort that, and now my PS3 is seemingly sorted, that's everything taken care off. Not used my Xbox yet, will see what happens later.
