can any engine be be made to fit any gearbox?

i mean x18xe1 to hillman imp gearbox

providing the gearbox is strong enough for said engine

what is involved?

so far i have worked out...

custom adaptor plate

new clutch but unsure how you would know which ones would work

there is a 1.4 k-series one floating about so it would be similar power but id rather be without the issues of hg failures ect

how does the output shaft mate up with the clutch plate if there is a plate sandwiched between the two?

there is a bit more work involved with release bearings etc, as steve said you could end with a clutch which won't disengage

"with all the bolts and spring washers removed lift the clutch assembly of the locating dowels. the driven plate will fall out at this stage as its not attached to the clutch cover assembly or the flywheel"

You;'d have to experiment.

As the old saying goes anything is possible depending on how much you are willing to spend

...but.. I think its a stupid idea! Its easier to use a Vauxhall box (if you can find one that fits in longitudinal format) and build a prop if its RWD.

If its mid/rear engine why not use the vauxhall box? its easier to make shafts than it is to modify a fixed bell house

the engine sits in the boot like this mate

id far rather cut the bulk head like this and keep it there than midmount it

if its possible id just like to give an x18 a go...
small
reliable
tunable

if not ill use the 1.4 froman mg zr

you mean the input shaft, the plate would only go round the bolt holes like a sandwich to change the bolt hole pattern, ive done a simlar thing before when fitting a 1.6 vitara engine to a 1.3 suzuki sj gearbox

or you could cut the bell housing off of a gearbox that fits the engine and weld it to the gearbox of your choice, ive seen it done with an xe to a type 9 box

on the cutting and welding? what engine are you fitting to what gearbox? you will obviously need a flywheel and clutch from what ever car the gearbox came from,
then you will need to get the flywheel adapted to fit the engine, the input shaft, you would need to measure and make the bell housing exactly the right length so the input shaft sits slides through the clutch plate easily but doesnt push on the back of the engine

its alot of work to be ohnest as the flywheel has to have the ring gear for the starter made or adapted and it all has to made properly and ballanced

kseries are very good engines! headgaskets are dead easy to replace ive done a fair few now.
once the gasket is changed for a landrover one theres not realy anything else to go wrong
