I would rather lose by a mile because i built my own car, than win by an inch because someone else built it for me.

And it's not just iPhone.

Its iPad and iPod Touch as well.

If they just have Wi Fi then they will log all Wi Fi locations. If they have GSM + Wi Fi then they will log GSM and Wi Fi data.

Is there a way you can block it? I am jailbroken if that makes a difference or makes it easier?

Why is this such a surprise? It's not exactly a secret?

Deleting consolidate.db every so often, encrypt iTunes backups.

The 'exploit' it's self isn't new, the visual mapping is.

It's only iPhones and iPad 3G's. They're not tracking you, they're not sending data via wifi or GSM (or any other network) and it doesn't use GPS. It's just a file used by the iOS location API that stays on your device or on your HDD when you backup your device.

Locating your phone at its current location when stolen is slightly different from apple tracking your every move.

The point I was trying to make was, the technology is already built in to the phone to be able to track where your phone is and Apple make no secret about it ("Find my iPhone").

quote:
Location data is kept in a hidden, unencrypted file according to security experts Alasdair Allan and Pete Warden.

Obviously the phone would need to store your location information somewhere on the handset in case you need to find out where it is!

quote:
With the right software, it can be used to map exactly where a person has been.

Yes, using the "Find my iPhone" service which is publicly advertised on the Apple website.

That's regarding the piece of software these two guys have written. All they're doing is mapping some data from the phone on your Mac and the important part of that phrase is 'where a person has been'. This doesn't have much to do with MobileMe, it's more along the lines of providing your location for when you open up an app which wants to know your location when you've got poor reception.

Imagine if the marketing people from Apple worked for Rover. You'd get people driving round in their Rover 45s telling people in Astons they should have bought a Rover.
