Just put my reader onto the car and the spark angle before tdc is all over the place, ranging from -2 to 12. Is this normal?

Well no matter how hard we tried we couldn't get to 100% dead on its about half a tooth max out. Would that cause a problem?

Very hard to diagnose from this end Martin! but seem's to me you have a plug down, because of
how constant it is.

Lumpy always but different types of lumpy. Sometimes it's bad then for a couple of seconds gets a bit better and goes back again

crank and knock sensor look fine, runs better at 3k but think it is slightly lumpy. at low revs e.g 1800 it sometimes jilts like its misfiring but once you pick up a bit of speed seems to run better.

don't think its as simple as that mate, its not revving itself , its lumpy and the engines shaking. we took the head off and put it all back together within the space of 3 days, i cant imagine it going funny just like that?

its gotta be a sensor i think, gonna have another look tomorrow.

Lumpy idle and engine shaking sounds timing related to me Martin. I'd pop the belt off and see if you can get it lined up perfectly first to so you can rule that out.

30/7

so tonight we tried to sort out the timing. when we tried to tension it up , i noticed the tensioner wasn't tightening. turns out its ruined the thread on the oil pump. so its officially game over. not interested in the engine anymore , luckily I've got another car so this one can just sit on the drive now.

im gonna look for someone to build it up and get it running properly so if anyone in kent is willing let me know.

2/8

after many many days and nights of swearing and loosing our tempers with this engine, i think its finally fixed!

sourced a new bolt for the tensionner and it tightened up fine, bought a cam locker, re-did the timing and it seems to have been running spot on!

i think the tensionner must have been not fully tensionned or loose previously causing the belt to get slack every so often and knocking it out of timing every so often causing the lumpy running.

seems to be idling much much better now, doesnt splutter in low revs either.

would like to say thanks to daine for all his help and knowledge in troubleshooting the problem through a computer screen
