was it working when you parked it, then the next day it wasnt?
if it was me i would check petrol, spark, have a look at belts on engine see if everything was still ok
but you have done most of those anyway so dont know

OK, well the car now starts thanks to a very knowledgeable AA patrol man and my dads Home Start. Thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread and I thought I'd pass on his advise and troubleshooting logic to solve the problem.
- The guy spun the engine and as suspected the engine didn't fire.
- he removed the small black corrugated plastic pipe from the fuel rail that covers a valve similar to a tyre valve
- whilst spinning the engine, he depressed the valve end and fuel shot everywhere, so this proved the pump was working
- he then removed the spark plugs and noticed excess fuel.
- he removed all plugs and heated them using a blow torch, not only to dry them, but provide heat inside the cylinder to burn off any fuel the next time the engine was spun
- he then removed the fuse for the fuel pump. (marked FI on the fuse box cover)
He then spun the engine and there was a distinct fire. The point of removing the fuse was so that as the engine spun, it didn't pump fuel into the cylinder, giving the air intake a chance to get rid of excess fuel.
- he then returned the fuel pump fuse, spun the engine, and everything started fine.
- his comment was, that modern cars nowadays were designed to start first time every time on the first turn of the ignition. If they didn't, then unburnt fuel was then expelled out of the exhaust and this was regarded as pollution. So, to get a car to start first time, loads of fuel is pumped into the cylinder. So, how does the car get flooded? Well if you move a car with a cold engine and you move it a short, then there is not enough heat and time for the fuel to evaporate from the cylinder. Because the cylinders are so well sealed, the petrol will just sit there, for weeks sometimes ans result in a flooded engine. The AA patrol man said the classic case was where someone reverses their car out of a garage on a sunday, onto their drive to wash it. After the wash, they try to start the engine to get it back in the garage and the car wont start. The engine is flooded.
- rather than take the spark plugs out and heat them, the tip is to remove the fuel pump fuse, spin the engine and get rid of the fuel, the car may even be heard to try to start. Then replace the fuel pump fuse, and all shlould be ok.
