After thinking about the spec i am aiming for and how much it would cost to get to the finished spec with 150bhp and i believe low on torque, i thought about looking at turbos for a bit of fun.

My current spec is

Mantzle
BMC CDA
Decat
Superchip

I found that my spec could be used for the base of the turbo. To complete the turbo on the x16xe i would need

Manifold from Courtenay to hold turbo - £269
Garret GT1548 Turbo GT1548
or GT2554 Turbo GT2554
FMIC
Piping
Stand Alone Management (capable of turbo) and Wiring
Double head gasket with spacer to lower compression

I was thinking that it would be something i want to do and it ould produce more power and a lot more torque than the spec i was aiming for. To complete the spec i was thinking of doing i would need Cams (£300), Verniers (£150), Headwork (£200), Exhaust Manifold (£200) and Dastek Unichip (£450) coming to a total of £1200. That could buy a lot of the equipment i require for the turbo set up.

opinions on the turbo set up? total cost of doing the turbo this way? and which turbo out if the two?

also what management is best?

I would have a word with the chap on here who was selling an X16xe turbo engine on here a little while ago. As they were using courtney parts with a spacer plate in the headgasket to lower the compression meaning it was running standard internals iirc

As a project and to be different then the turbo idea is quite a good one, IMO of course. You would learn quite a bit about building engines and have a good feeling of achievement when its all done (supposing it works)

Money wise though Im sure you are aware there are cheaper ways of getting more power, a standard LET would make more power than you are likely to achieve from the turbo 1.6 at moderate boost. My guess is that it could quite easily cost you £2k-£3k for the 1.6 project.

If you have the time and money and fancy a project then go for it!

i have always like the idea of having the 1.6 turbo as they are rare. I am very aware of the let and the xe but everyone seems to do them, plus i wouldnt want to do another conversion for a while, as the x16xe was a converson from the x14xe.

i would love to have the x16xe turbo and be pushin 160 - 180 bhp. the idea has always appealed to me

If I was building a 16XE Turbo, I wouldn't even consider it without decent pistons and management.

It CAN be done without either of those, but without some good pistons, it's never going to make decent power as you can't run much boost.

The T15 isn't worth bothering with either IMO, T25 is a bit weedy too, but like I say, without decent pistons, either will do fine as you'll be able to run about 5psi.

Management wise, there's no way I'd use a piggyback chip, I'd want to be able to control my fuelling and ignition perfectly so that I didn't melt a piston every 4 days.

Isn't 5psi less than you produce when you fart though?
