No i do get it with all the perks with your new job etc but you got see the points above have reason?

We often know how budget track cars spiral out of control and end up being acid dipped despite only having 24k on the clock (yes you know who you are) So that the point I am making. If your building something from scrath its ineveritably going to get expensive regardless of contacts etc

I'm not convinced that your reasons for RWD are sound.

Better - yes if you listen to BMW adverts - but really is this a physics issue?

Easier - no more difficult than valvering a Corsa. Plus the only issue there is custom shafts on a big block box. If you go RWD Duratec you'll need bell housing for your standard box or perhaps fit a Ford box and then bodge a prop?

I think above you need to look at motives. If this is for the company then of course it needs to fit in the fleet somewhere. But then with respect, they're not paying for it, you are. And it should be you who uses and enjoys it. This for me would make the decision to go easy and predictable too difficult to resist.

Although a Duratec Manta would be cool.

It's not going to be shiny like JRs, I'm not a bufty

Even if I went for an FWD car, it would be 'expensive' to spec it to a decent standard, parts aren't any more expensive, so if I bought a 205, it'd end up costing me 'loads' in the long run, as I'd get carried away with it.

New shape MX5 gearbox bolts straight on, 3 different Ford boxes will go on with an off the shelf bellhousing. Prop would depend on the car I went for, if I went for an MX5, the prop will fit, failing that, custom ones aren't massive money.

If you had have come in here and said money is no object I want something retro-cool, wacky, rare and yet monster fast I would have said yeah build a top spec Duratec Manta.

However you said I want to do it on the cheap but I want to take everything apart first, which reminded me too much of my own experience. A car I never drove.

Plus a rebuild, making it a lot more.

MX5 box would be about £600, but they're all low mileage.

I'm not saying I want to do it cheap, I just want the initial outlay to be cheap, so that the car is on my drive (or in the workshop) without having to save up for it for ages.

I know it won't be cheap, doing stuff right never is, but when you're building a car, you don't buy everything in one go, you do it bit by bit, which I can afford to do.

If I could go out and buy an ex Roland Ratzenberger E36 M3 3.0, I would, believe me, it's much better to buy something which is already done, but that's just not going to happen unless I find a brown envelope stuffed with 50s.

mk1 MX5 with a Duratec (or Mazda MZR) engine sounds like a reasonable plan to me, that's in the same vain as a Corsa with an XE, although the engine is modern and the car isn't so, not the other way round

Only just seen this.

Wiring, whatever engine I go for, it'll be on Gotech, so the wiring is the same difficulty.

Cooling, decent rad, some silicon hoses, some jubilee clips, easy.

Gearbox, use one of the 4 I have to choose from.

Prop, yes, potentially an issue, but custom ones can be made.

Shafts, depends which axle I'd use. There's loads available, most can handle a fair chunk of power, even standard stuff.

4 out of those 5 are a potential issue in a FWD car.

yes... but they arent a 'easy peasy ' job.

Fitting brakes with no fabrication work is easy..... introduce fabrication and it isnt as simple

None of them are rocket science though. The only one which could be a problem is a prop, the others are simple, mounts are available off the shelf for putting a Duratec in a RWD car, it's just a case of trimming them to suit the shape of the chassis rails and welding them on, we've put an electric water pump on Mark's car, meaning fabrication of the rear coolant pipe, which wasn't hard, so coolant pipes aren't a problem. Wiring, Mark could do that with his eyes closed.

You seem to be making it out to be harder than it is. If people have got Duratec engines in old Escorts in their sheds, a specialist company is going to have no issue with it.

I don't see the problem. I want to spend my money on a small, light RWD car, with an engine which I like, it's not like I'm spending all your money on it
