Right, here goes.

My car is using a bit of oil (covered just over 76k, X10XE) but nothing major. I do quite a few short journeys in it. It isn't losing/using ANY water and I can't see smoke coming out of the back.

However, under the fuel filler cap, there is 'mayo' type stuff, and it's also on the top side of the rocker cover gasket. On the side of the engine, there looks what is to be fresher oil than all the older burnt on stubborn stuff.

Would a leaky rocker cover gasket cause a slight build up of mayo, especially in this damp weather? I had a head gasket test done a while ago, and it was absolutely fine, no colour change in the fluid what so ever.

So yeah, just wondered if I should be weary about the oil leak (if it in fact is, I've cleaned that side of the engine a bit) and whether that would cause a slight 'mayo' build up?!

Cheers in advance

I assume you mean oil filler cap deano?

Yea I think it could, as if it leaks oil outwards, it may also be allowing moisture in, and in these conditions moisture build up is very common, especially after short journeys.

IMO, change the rocker cover gasket, clean it all up so you can see if any oil leaks again, and see if it comes back

a bit of shit under the oil cap isnt uncommon at this time of year it only takes a tiny bit of condensation especially on short journeys

if the rocker cover gasket needs doing do it, the mayo will clear up in the summer though, both the saxo and my corsa did it at this time of year

chances are its losing the oil through the oil pressure sensor switch, they are apparently a common fault, mine was losing loads of oil before i got it fixed.
the replacement switch is a fiver from vauxhall and takes a minute to fit

Yes, I mean oil filler cap.

It is more than condensation though.

Cheers guys, I might get it done soon then.

I know it probably isn't more serious, because I covered 180 'swift' miles today taking Gregg to get Fro's Corsa and there were no problems. Water temp barely rose above 92-ish.

unless there is an obvious leak from the rocker cover gasket i would wait till the weather freshens up a bit to see if it goes

unless your gonna do it your self, it would cost you a few quid and give you summat to do for a bit

It's due for an MOT soon, and a service will be soon after. Have a feeling it will fail the MOT on numerous things so will probably wait till then.

No performance dips, no water consumption. Fuck knows

Well, I've been giving it a bit of death lately. No oil really leaking from the rocker cover gasket, and the majority of the mayo has gone no water being used.

Looks like it had needed a few good runs out - had been driving it like a right olden

Are all your rocker bolts tightened down?

I recently had to helicoil about 8 of my redtop rocker bolt threads due to all of them being over tightened. I had oil all in the engine bay where the rocker wasnt adequately secured.

Your issue sounds like a leak and a bit of condensation.

Naaa, they're definitely ok. When I had the cam chain replaced, it was a kit for a Z10XE, so the rocker cover gasket wasn't replaced. It wasn't hugely porous, but was covered in grease and been fine ever since.

That was a good 10k ago though, and the majority of that 10k or so has been in the shit weather lately, so thought it may be time to replace the gasket.

But it doesn't seem to be leaking after giving it a bit of death to and from Santa Pod on Sunday.

And also like said, the condensation under the rocker cover has gone now.
