No smoke, running really smooth and responsive. Head was skimmed.

did the head gasket go on it before you rebuilt it?

Replace the Thermostat with a new one.
When I bled the coolant system on the 1.2. I took the cap off the coolant, put the heaters on full and held it at 3k for a minute or so.
Eventually the I heard the airlock come up!

Does your thermostat housing not have a bleed screw on? Some did.
No pissing about with waiting for your expansion tank erupt then
Is your thermostat actually opening?

Yeh, i'll try a new stat. Don't want to leave ideling too long becuase I don't think the fan is coming on

check the top and bottom hoses are getting hot.also run your hand over the surface of the rad to make sure the coolant is circulating through it properly.its sounds like to me like you have no circulation i.e. a blockage,air lock or your stat is'nt opening

1. get engine up to about 95 degrees
2. remove cap from expansion tank
3. put blowers on hot on setting 2
4. run on fast idle (2000rpm) until coolant bubbles over from expansion tank
5. let it bubble over for 5-10 seconds
6. turn off engine and blowers
7. leave to cool down completely
8. top up expansion tank
that will get any airlocks out.

Hmmm, or you could of just done the normal thing and removed the temp sender, filled the coolant system till it started to appear from the sender hole, and then re-fitted.... A lot simpler lol
Anyways, back on topic, sounds maybe like a stat jammed shut to me.

Just had it running, the coolent level doesn't even rise...
All pipes are getting hot..
Just seen the coolent pipe that goes to the TB was kinked and the water wasen't flowing back into the expansion tank. Dunno if that has anything to do with it

Sounds like no coolant is running through the rad(blockaged/jammed stat)
Remove the thermostat and check it opens in hot water.
