I need a step by step guide how to run in a new set of pistons & rings, as I haven't got a clue how many miles is needed, or when oil changes are needed etc
Really appreciate any replies

fit pistons (after honing the bores) using plenty of oil on the bores during assembly. if engine is being started soon after fitting of pistons then normal mineral oil should be used when fitting conrods back onto the crank, may as well fit new shells and some arp bolts while you are there. make sure you use plenty of oil on the shells and crank when refitting as well. make sure the rings are positioned correctly, I fitted the rings onto the pistons for you before sending them. basicly make sure the compression gap on each ring is at 180 degrees from the one above it.
once its all in (and you have filled the sump with MINERAL OR RUNNING IN OIL) turn the engine over by hand with the spark plugs, injector plugs and distributor plug off, make sure it all rotates freely. then refit spark plugs and crank it over on the starter until the oil light goes out.
then the distributor plug and injectors can be refitted and start up the engine.
let it idle for about 1 minute and check for leaks etc, dont leave the car to idle for long periods, just get it up to temp and make sure the coolant and oil is as it should be. then drive it as follows:
500 miles at varying revs up to 3000 rpm
change oil for more mineral oil (and filter)
500 miles up to 4000 rpm varied revs
change oil and filter for good quality 10w 40 (vaux stuff)
drive it normally gradually increasing the revs over the next 500 miles

One more thing, wont I need to change the oil after a couples minutes of start up? heard you should somewhere
And does it matter how much I put the engine under load during the running in period?

some people say to change the oil after the initial warmup but its not necessary on modern engines imo.
try not to labour or load the engine during running in, just keep the engine where its happy to rev freely with minimum amount of throttle. so no hill starts in 3rd gear.

No. I bought them from spec engines. They were ones he had lying around for a while so maybe they've altered the design since mine. Definatly straight swap. I double checked with him to make sure. He's hd to countersink certin ones on different engines before but not mine. Strange???

its better to put the engine under loads (slight and varying) to get the rings bedded properly.
Running it in at no load (idle like conditions) isn the best.
