Afternoon everyone,

I have a problem with my laptop, think I got a virus and so it can't connect to a wireless network and crashes when I go into My Documents. If I format the drive should this cure the problem?

If it will then, please can someone give me a step by step guide of how to do it?

Thanks!!!

I was going to burn a copy of the existing files (My Documents) onto a CD so that they will not be lost.

if i was you chaff, i would connect your laptop to your router (wired) and run an online scan for virus checks (just about any antivirus company has this facility on their website.

not being able to connect to a wireless network certainly does not point anywhere near a virus.

Viruses/Worms like to spread as much as possible. cutting of the net would only prevent this.

hmm.. try and keep away from simple p2p programs... cant stress that enough.

Slip the WinXP CD into your PC.. restart the machine.

IT should prompt you.. "press any key to boot off the CD".
IF it doesnt, restart the machine again and press DEL to enter the Bios and change the startup/boot priority.
You want to boot from CD before HD or HD-0.
(thinking about it, with most laptops, you can press "f2" at start and select your startup method.

Anyway, when you've booted off the CD eventually, just follow the instructions, making sure you dont follow instructions for a repair, you want a clean install.
it will ask you where you want to install the the windows too, and you select the main partition (with most space).
then the next option is to format using NTFS (quick).

then just let it do its own thing.
It will reboot a couple of times later on down the line and possibly ask you if you want to boot of the CD again.. just leave it and let it load itself.

that should help you out.
