just had a quote to replace timing belt, tensioner, water pump, pulley. quoted £850-£1250 from a local reputable garage. The car is only worth £1000, do i let this go and then claim on insurance, dont think its worth spending this amount, the car is an 8 years old 16v and covered 25k. Any ideas ?

that price is insane and you can't claim on insurance for engine failure

surely the car would be uneconomical to repair and therefore a write off if cost that much.

surely at 25k you shouldnt be needing tensioner, pulley, w/pump and a cambelt?

insurance defo wont cover it, and 1250 seems absolutely ridiculous, more like 250 - 400.

if i was you, since the mileage is VERY LOW, id sell it on now, and let the person who has it next find out its problems.

yeah prob sell it on, the timing belt does look quite worn on the edges and little niks have come loose, but it has a cover it so you dont notice on looking.

ah rite, i guess the age is just as important as the mileage :s

i'd definitely sell it on, i know some ppl on the forum wouldnt like that advice but since its only done 25k the buyer wouldnt suspect anything could be wrong anyway, so would probably blame themselves

Vauxhall wouldnt even attempt to charge you that much to do it

You should be paying no more than £300 to get all that done on a 16v engine.

its bout £100 for timing belt kit, possible waterpump so add another £60, then you got 2 hours labour so bout £60, 2.5 to 3 ltr on antifreeze so another £10

job done for £230 plus vat and that will be genuine parts

fiat coupe 20v turbo belts only cost bout £1000 and there an engine out job

I think you are all missing the point. 16v eninge = high compression = low valve clearence. When the timing belt fails the valves usually turn the insides of the engine into little pieces.

Vauxhall timing belts could cost a grand to replace as you may have to replace the whole engine with it...

The car I have now had a timing belt snap on its old engine, so was replaced by Vauxhall with a new unit before I bought it. I have the receipt for the repair, which came to a total (including labour, fluids etc) of £1750.
That was for a new x16xe around a year ago.
