I'm renewing the timing belt on my sons 1.4 Sport the Haynes tell me to put it in gear and put the brakes on - I don't like the sound of that stressing gear train etc. The other way of removing the starter seems better but is a pig to get to. IS THERE ANY OTHER WAY? if the starter way is the best option what tool is recommended to lock flywheel and how do I get one quickly.

usually leaving it gear and giving it a sharp jolt does the job fine... i've done this 2 or 3 times with no problems whatsoever

put a breaker bar on the bolt and rest it on the ground pointing toward the front and crank the engine a little

done it twice and its been ok the engine is forcing the bar down into the ground and its just a second of engine cranking just loosens the bolt

Advice from SRi-Co worked a treat. I bought an E18 Draper Torx Socket for £4.12 put car in 5th gear, brakes hard on and using "Tee bar" with 3ft tube extention, it unscrewed nice and easy. Thanx.
