whats the tuning potential of each, i intened to strip down and rebuild whichever lump i buy anyway, it just seems that there are more x20xev lumps available than red tops at the moment

wiring isnt a problem for me either... coz i'm a genius you see

you can easily get 200bhp from Ecotec to.
Read on Practical perfomance Mag the article about Ecotec and the QED kit.
Very tasty literature by the way, great mag

"The ecotec may be down on power slightly compared to the XE, but it's got more low down grunt so in the real world it's just as quick (bhp for show, torque for go )."

"The ecotec develops 139lb ft torque @3,200 rpm compared with 144lb ft torque at 4,800rpm for the XE, so it should pull harder at lower revs."

"right, so the erly xes ahd forged pitons, better rods and a cosworth head which was well finished and of good quality which made them very tuneable.

But compared to the later xe's which had budget bottom ends and gm heads, where does the ecotec fall down?? Manifold design isnt an issue as any serious tuning replaces both anyway. Is the head design really that bed?? Can it be sorted with headwork, or is it fundamentally cra[p in some way?? Obviously vaux went for the emmisions hence egr etc, but again, these go with the manifolds for tuning. Whats the ecotec bottom end like??? The block must be ok, as chip is using a brand new one fpr his 500 brake rwd nova project. What about rods and pistons for mild states of tune?? Beyond that, lubrication issues etc.

Whay are they so bad, I agree as std engines they are terrible for power, but why are they so much worse to tune than the xe??"
