Had to try and flog monster cables when I worked at Currys back in the day. I was a fairly honest salesman though, think I sold one in a year or two there, hardly ever made commission

Was a massive incentive on them due to the gigantic markup £40 for a scart lead etc.

As said, complete waste of money spending it on "high end cables" its all bollocks!

The cheeper the better, they either send a signal or they don't.

whilst I agree with the not spending daft money on them, some of the cheaper designs can fail. Same picture quality but where the chord puts stress on the "plug" end it has started to come apart on one of mine.

Worth picking a good design, hopefully cheaply

Was a guy on tv once, he had an hdmi connected up, cut into it and separated the wires and bridged them with random things like a kitchen knife and it made no difference to the picture quality.

Digital isn't black and white, there is a shade of grey in between as you can have issues with clocking (/jitter) which then can have a knock-on affect with error correction etc

So you're right in that you shouldn't go out and spend £100 on a Monster cable, however you shouldn't be buying the cheapest cable either. Rather buy a cable that has decent connectors and a decent amount of copper in it
