Have you kept the same pipe to the pump and it it all clipped in right?

Can be a pain to get the lid on, best to put the O-ring around the lid first then push it down as hard as you can then tap the locking ring round with a screwdriver and hammer

If its all clipped down right and youve used the right pipe (one that bends 90 degrees straight after the pump) then you can push as hard as you like, its usually the rubber O-ring thats stopping it though.

Try pressing it down without the O-ring in place and if it goes down easy they you just need to pay a bit more attention to it. If it still wont go down then its something youve done wrong with the pump or piping
