Garage just rang. They say it needs a new Air Mass Meter. I replaced this with one from ebay about 10-12 months ago, at a cost of £40. Was this a genuine part??
The cost of repair is now £180 for the part and £40 labour. Hmm...

edit: turns out that the car 'only' needs a new air flow sensor for the hesitation it has (which is abolsutely annoying), but I'm not spending £220+VAT on that. No idea what was actually fixed to get the car to start, will try to find out when they drop it back in 10mins.

Got the car back. Couldn't find out what was actually wrong cos it was just a driver dropping it back. Car is running how it was before it completely died though...quite shittly. As always this has something to do with the AFM. I'd like to try cleaning it, if that might help in some way.

The garage just charged me £30...and no parts. So I've no idea what they fixed to get it running.

Corsa B 1999 1.2 16V sxi.
So it's fixed as such. I'm just left with the hesitation I've always had. I'm still wondering if there is any benefit to be had by cleaning the AFM, and wonder how this can be done. I'm not buying another £35 'Bosch' part from ebay if it's only going to fix the problem for a couple of weeks before becoming hesitant again.

Grrr. Tried the car today expecting it to work but still have the hesistancy that it normally has. Started alright, but after 30 seconds of idling it died....then it wouldn't start ...and eventually nothing.

I then disconnected the AFM and it started fine, idled fine, and drove 'fine'. Well it drove how it has been for months, with hesitancy and has flat spots etc. (But I am pretty used to this). So it seems like ALL the problems are likely to be caused by the AFM. Fun.

Two questions:

1) will I do any damage running the car without the AFM? I've probably been running it without a properly functioning one for months and months. The engine electronic management light comes on, but I can just ignore that.

2) what's the difference between the AFMs on ebay and those from Vauxhall? Are they definitely not the same part? should ebay ones be avoided? The one that has just broke was a 'Bosch' part bought from ebay. The car ran well for a week or so (after a ECU reset) and than was rubbish again. Should I stump up LOADS of cash for the part from Vauxhall?

Please help
