Coming home from work today my car decided to start acting a coont

Sounded like it was missing its bollocks off & really chugging along. I may as well have not been revving as 4000 revs was only just keeping it moving. Didn't feel like there was any pressure behind it at all Lots of bangs, spits & pops plus muchos smoke.

Not had a chance to go inspect as its pitch black outside. Anyone suggest what it could be? I thought it could be the head gasket as there is hardly any compression behind it at all. although it did seem like sometimes it wanted to spring back to life.

make sure engine is warm (if pos) fit a guage to plug hole crank record pressure, on mine i remove master coil lead so it wont start not sure with your set up, many people often do a wet test afterward also, all 4 cylinders shoulb be around 190 psi, i suspect if it is a headgasket it will show up without a wet test

go to your local car shop or tool place and get a compression tester, instructions will be on the back, cost you about £20. If you can change a spark plug you can do the test.

Right, we just had a power cut over here & it was pitch black in the house. Figured if its as dark inside as it is outside I may as well go have a look

Took spark plugs out & cleaned them up. Most of them were very black, I have to clean them quite often as my car runs quite rich! Put them back in & started it up. Idle'd ok, not 100% correct though.

Took it out for a spin & the problem is still there. Im now thinking that its not a compression problem as the car does kinda get power when I accelerate. it almost feels like its trying but something is blocking it/restricting it. Almost like it is choking.

Figured if I got it up to tempreture & then took it out for a spin it might clear it out a little. It did so a little bit but its still running like a bag of balls

There were a few pops which maybe suggests that the fuel is getting through but not igniting properly/at all? That make sense?

Any more ideas?

Its booked in at the Garage on Thursday now. I don't really have the time for messing with it

Off work tomorrow though so I'll try the compression test I think

What about fuel pump? How do I check that? Not convinced its a lack of fueling though, if anything its over fueling

check the fuel pressure by fitting a fuel pressure gauge.

has it been mapped properly if its fouling plugs like that?

If it was your headgasket you could do the usual check to see if your oil is mixing with your water (mayo in header tank or under oil cap)

what colour smoke was it?

do you have a link cable to be able to connect your ecu to a laptop to see what your throttle position sensor is doing?

just had a look at your pics. The yellow circle on here is your tps it may have moved which would cause some rough running which is what j1400 is suggesting it might be.

the red circle worries me tho.
This fuel pipe looks like it is kinked by being bent to much. Is it just the photo or is the pipe actually causing a restriction to the fuel flow.

The red circle bit was a problem from a while ago, fuel pipe had split & I had to bodge it together. Totally sorted now that though

I do have the Omex management software/lead yeah but I've never used it. Took one look at the book that came with it & got scared

Anyone know if its easy to use?

I'll go check the TPS

It was fine one min whilst I was driving though & then it went all funny

Or if it's gone between chamber and water jacket.

I'd check plugs first, see if one is more sooty than another.
Could be a lead, or the col pack breakign down too, esp as it's getting cold now.
These are simpel things to try first.
Then try removing the injector plus in turn to find the lame cyl, if there's no major change in pitch when removign on you'ev found the issue.

Its working OK now

Maybe it had just got wet? Sucked in a bit of water?

Warmed it up & kept it at about 1500prm until it was to tempreture & took it out for a spin. Seemed fine.

Not sure if I should start taking it to bits now to see whats wrong, bit hard to do fault finding when the fault isn't there
