Been quoted the above to have it all changed. Says he will do the waterpump, cambelt, tensioner pullys and sort the head out incase its been damaged in anyway. Seems to be a lot of things to have changed. Is it all necessary?

I need it fixed so i can sell the car.

After ringing Vaux and being quoted £283 + VAT for an air flow meter that seems a very fair price to me

its is all necessary, but £500 is a bit steep, 350-400 seems more reasonable to me.

Hmmm, thanks although this isn't through a dealer, its supposed to be one of dads good friends who "will see me right" apparently. See me poor more like.

Car isn't worth more than £2500 in its current state. Feckin engine has had loads of money splashed on it over the last 8 months. Just want rid. Sick of it now. Only done 39000 miles and its had cambelt, water pump, gearbox oil sump gasket, and now this. Boooooo, bloody car.

hang on, just seen he's doing the cambelt as well, 500 is a deal mate

soz didn't see that, vaux would charge 200-250 for cambelt alone

yeah? he said waterpump, cambelt, tensioner pulleys and anything else thats related to it. Basically new running gear. Probably in case the heat from the head when it was overheating has warped any metal like on the water pump flange. I guess its just a safety measure to make sure everything bolts on straight once the gasket is replaced.

it should work in your favour when you sell - make sure you get paperwork - new cambelt is good piece of mind for the buyer if it can be proved its been done

Cambelt needs to come off to do the head gasket.

I never had my waterpump changed???

I had

New gaskets
New head bolts
had the head flowed (or it'll go pop again in a few months)

That cost me £300 and i've known people to get it done cheaper. Your dads "mate" sounds morelike a cowboy.

Also, my oil pump gasket went. Did you still have the paper type gasket or a metal one? Mine was paper and replacement was metal.

1.4 16v engine is known for oil pump gasket problems and head gaskets going pop (as is the 1.6). More commen on the Pre 97 engines.

And they are sh1te.

Pick urself a new set of cam belt tensioners from SBD (metal) for about £80-£90 and replace them yourself.

do the job yerself! most of that price is more than likley labour.

get a gasket kit.
cam belt and rolers
new head bolts
waterpump

inlet/outllet 14-16 bolts? take them off
head is held on by 8 bolts?10?

get yerself a haynes and a torque wrench and a set of splines.

cant be that difficult.

Will need the head skimmed otherwise as i mentioned it runs a very high chance of popping again in a few months.

Warped water pump? No chance. Changing the water pump would only be because its easy to do now whilst its apart, else if it goes you have to take it all apart again. Dont bother if your selling it.

£70 for a cam belt? £190 for a cam belt kit? You guys need to learn about the joys of autovaux, about £80. When was the cam belt last changed? If it wasn't all that long ago I'd use the same cam belt and rollers, and not mention the head gasket when I sold it.

Get a set of head bolts for £12, a gasket for £16. Get the head checked when its off, it will probably be ok, then just put it back together with the new gasket.

Getting the head skimmed is a pain the ass as you have to take all the valves and cams out.
