i've been ppolishing my plug cover.
milled off the vauxhall and left the rest.
when taking off the paint and working up the grades of wet and dry it was fine, but after i'd started using the polish the lettering has ghosted back up from where it used to be. evn though it is flat and smooth
why would it do this? any ideas?

Different 'grain' in the metal?
Try milling it a bit more?

if it was milled further it would leave a slight step where it reaches the other set of lettering that is raised.

if just the vauxhall was milled then thats why, you need to skim the complete surface a small bit

i dont think anything will cure it, all i can suggest is chrome it, or plate it, powdercoat it

It's from the casting and grains of the metal. Lots of boring crap. The only way I can see how your going to solve this is take more material off, have it anodized (not sure if you can anodize the casting though) or have it electroplated/chromed...

are they alloy or steel?
may try for anodized gold if it's ally, or if not i quite fancy copper plating.
shame the polishing didn't work.

You could try using the acid they use to engrave with? leaving it on for a while then washing it, then flattening it down again
